The implementation of teaching and learning 5 days/week must ensure the conditions according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, completing the content and curriculum of general education 2018 according to the school year plan.
The Department of Education and Training is assigned to provide specific guidance on the implementation of teaching and learning 5 days/week to ensure effective implementation of the content, program, and tasks of the school year. At the same time, conduct inspections and checks on the implementation of teaching and learning 5 days/week; promptly report and propose to the Provincial People's Committee to resolve difficulties, problems, and issues arising beyond its authority.
At the end of the 2024-2025 school year, Lai Chau Department of Education and Training will organize an assessment of the situation and results of implementing 5-day/week teaching and learning in the area and report to the Provincial People's Committee.
Talking to Thanh Nien reporters about this directive, Mr. Dinh Trung Tuan, Director of Lai Chau Department of Education and Training, said that the spirit of the Provincial People's Committee's directive is to properly implement the general regulations on working hours of 5 days/week and based on the feasibility of the schools. However, places that meet the conditions will have Saturday and Sunday off, places that do not meet the conditions will have alternating days off during the week, ensuring only working and studying 5 days/week.
According to Mr. Tuan, according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, schools have the right to proactively develop timetables and educational plans that are suitable to their school's facilities, teaching staff, etc. In addition, it is necessary to discuss and receive the consent of parents before implementation.
Regarding concerns about whether having 2 days off from school per week will lead to extra teaching and learning, Mr. Dinh Trung Tuan said that this is not a cause for concern because schools and teachers must comply with the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, with the supervision and consensus of parents and society.
Recently, the Department of Education and Training of Ha Tinh City (Ha Tinh Province) announced that the city is piloting a program for local secondary school students to have Saturdays off from school starting this school year. The pilot program for teaching 5 days a week (from Monday to Friday) was implemented by the Department of Education and Training of Ha Tinh City after receiving permission from the Department of Education and Training.
The leader of the Department of Education and Training of Ha Tinh City explained: "The Saturday school break is to reduce pressure on teachers and students. Currently, in the city, there are 9 secondary schools, 8 of which have implemented this policy. After more than 1 week of implementation, the decision to let students take a day off from regular school on Saturday has received high consensus from teachers, parents and students. We also require schools to have a plan to arrange teaching and learning to ensure compliance with regulations, not exceeding 8 periods/day, not to squeeze study hours and not to cut the general curriculum. In particular, we also direct schools to require teachers not to organize extra teaching and learning."
Currently, nationwide, most primary schools have two sessions per day so they have full days off on Saturday and Sunday. However, most students in secondary and high schools still only have one session per day and have to organize formal teaching on Saturday due to lack of facilities and teachers.
