On November 29, the Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Commission, Ho Chi Minh City National University, the Ministry of Science and Technology , and CT Group jointly organized the National Science Conference: Biotechnology Development Strategy for the 2026-2030 period, with a vision to 2045.
The global biotechnology market in 2025 is estimated at US$1.8 trillion and is forecast to grow strongly in the coming years, doubling by 2030, with key drivers including advances in research, applications of artificial intelligence, gene editing technology, and growing demand for advanced solutions in healthcare, agriculture , and industry.
According to statistics, this market in Vietnam is currently about 1.5 billion USD, accounting for less than 0.1% of the world market. Compared with the markets of countries in the Asian region, it is estimated that China is about 100 times larger than Vietnam, Japan is about 55 times, Korea is 28 times and India is about 25 times.
Speaking at the event, Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai, Vice President of Ho Chi Minh City National University, said that from the perspective of Ho Chi Minh City National University, we are very concerned with these numbers.

Ho Chi Minh City National University has the strength of an interdisciplinary university system, with abundant resources in artificial intelligence and biotechnology with more than 250 experts and scientists in these fields, however, the transfer into commercial products is still very limited.
Recognizing the role and mission of transferring knowledge and connecting with the national and international innovation ecosystem, Ho Chi Minh City National University has been very proactive in the process of becoming a model higher education institution in the "3-house" cooperation connection.
Thereby, "it is expected that relevant parties will cooperate and focus resources to catch up with countries in the region. Otherwise, we will certainly miss the pace with the rapid growth of the biotechnology sector," Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai emphasized.
Comrade Huynh Thanh Dat, Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Commission, affirmed that biotechnology is not only a simple field of science and technology, but more deeply, it is an important form of "knowledge infrastructure", contributing to ensuring health security, food security, and environmental security. At the same time, it opens up new growth space for the economy in the next stage of development of the country.
Comrade Huynh Thanh Dat also emphasized that biotechnology is a field that requires long-term strategic vision, but at the same time, it also needs specific, drastic and focused actions starting today.
Thereby, the Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Commission hopes that experts and scientists will continue to propose research directions that can create practical products.
Enterprises boldly participate in ordering, investing and accompanying. Management agencies pay attention to listening, promptly removing barriers in mechanisms and policies, creating the most favorable conditions for the biotechnology sector to develop properly, maximize its potential, and meet the requirements of national development in the new period.
At the workshop, experts and scientists focused on discussing three main pillars: Positioning the national biotechnology strategy based on breakthrough spearheads such as medicine and health; agriculture and green products; environment and sustainable development; bioinformatics and artificial intelligence.

Proposal to remove bottlenecks with the "Sandbox" mechanism (legal framework for testing): Shorten the process of appraisal and licensing of clinical trials for key research products; build a pilot mechanism for commercializing scientific and technological products in universities; invest in a system of internationally standardized laboratories and national testing centers.
Proposal to pilot the “3-house” cooperation model into practice. In which, enterprises are not only the ordering units but also strategic investors, accompanying from R&D (research and development) to commercialization.
The workshop was held in the context of the whole country implementing the preliminary review and assessment of the results of the implementation of Resolution No. 189/NQ-CP dated November 16, 2023 of the Government on promulgating the Government's Action Program to implement Resolution 36-NQ/TW dated January 30, 2023 of the Politburo on the development and application of biotechnology to serve the country's sustainable development in the new situation.
Accordingly, the workshop is not only a meaningful scientific forum but also a space for important policy "advice" from scientists, experts, research institutes, universities, and leading domestic and international enterprises.
