“Global Capstone Design 2025”: A Competition Aimed at Solving Practical Problems in Vietnam

Through the Capstone project, Vietnamese and Korean students collaborated to develop ideas, build models and propose solutions to solve practical problems in Vietnam, while practicing global thinking and inter-school cooperation.

The “Global Capstone Design 2025” competition, organized by the Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics and Finance (UEF) in collaboration with the Daejeon University-Industry Cooperation Council (Korea) from November 24 to 28, attracted more than 100 lecturers and students from 12 universities in Vietnam and Korea.

According to the organizers, the 19 competing teams aim to select practical problems in Vietnam for students from both countries to develop ideas, build models, and creative solutions in the form of Capstone projects, thereby forming inter-school and inter-national working groups and promoting global thinking.

Inheriting the spirit of the theme "Smart Life" - smart life associated with ESG, IoT, ICT, AI and Big Data values ​​of the 2024 season, the 2025 theme continues to focus on technological, economic and social solutions, aiming to serve the community, businesses and build smart cities.

The projects are evaluated on a 100-point scale, based on the following criteria: creativity, feasibility, international cooperation between Vietnamese and Korean students, social impact, and presentation and argumentation skills. In particular, the international cooperation criterion accounts for 20% of the total score, affirming the position of the competition as a Capstone program that meets global standards.

During the competition days, Vietnamese and Korean students worked in groups, built and completed projects, participated in competition sessions, presented and debated before a panel of experts. Accordingly, many outstanding projects aimed at sustainable solutions and technology applications, serving the community and businesses such as: Vizone - smart elevator system for the visually impaired; WaterLine - mist barrier to reduce dust; SAI Safe - AI safety device sensor and warning system; Mindgreen - AI application combining emotions to build a smart and happy city; HCM Smart Emergency Medical Service - technology application to support emergency medical services in Ho Chi Minh City...

As a result, the Special Prize went to the SenseSave project - a real-time accident detection and warning system by a joint team of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (Le Gia Thang, Nguyen Thi Minh Anh) and Mokwon University - Korea (Park Yeseul, Kim JimYeong). The First Prize was awarded to 3 projects: Vizone by a group of students from UEF and Hanbat National University; A:I Say - a voice-based Deep Learning model by students from Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics and Chungnam National University; WaterLine by a group of students from UEF and Hanbat National University.

The two projects that won second prize include: VKRO - an application for analyzing traffic density and warning of floods by students of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education and Daeduk University; SAI Safe by students of Saigon South Polytechnic College and Korea Polytechnic IV- Daejeon; the remaining teams received third prizes.

Along with that is a series of activities to visit businesses, partner agencies, learn about the actual working environment and interact with employers. Cultural experience programs, city tours, and connecting gala help students expand their international network of friends, and learn more about the life and culture of the two countries.

According to Dr. Nhan Cam Tri, Vice President of UEF, the value that the competition brings to students of the two countries, above all, is the friendship, academic and cultural exchange after the time of researching the project together. Solving practical problems in Vietnam with Korean students helps Vietnamese students consolidate their professional knowledge, entrepreneurial thinking and technology application capacity. Through contact with businesses and organizations supporting startups, students have the opportunity to find internships and jobs, and at the same time possess outstanding evidence in their academic and career profiles.
