Alonso is Chelsea's top target for the manager's job. |
Chelsea are very close to appointing Xabi Alonso as their new head coach after a disappointing season under Liam Rosenior.
According to an exclusive report from the Telegraph , the Stamford Bridge club wants to finalize the deal just days after the FA Cup final against Manchester City on May 16th.
Alonso is currently the top choice. Chelsea's management has directly contacted the Spanish manager and also discussed other options such as Andoni Iraola, Marco Silva, and Oliver Glasner.
An internal source says Chelsea are not keen on prolonging the manager selection process. "Everything will move quickly after the final. Chelsea hope to reach an agreement within a few days, a maximum of 10 days," the source revealed.
Xabi Alonso made a huge impact by leading Bayer Leverkusen to victory in the Bundesliga, the German Cup, and the German Super Cup. This success made the former Real Madrid midfielder one of the most sought-after coaches in Europe. He later had a brief stint managing Real Madrid, but without much success.
Chelsea believe that Alonso's ball-control style and ability to work with young players are a good fit for the current Stamford Bridge squad.
Furthermore, the former Spanish international's great reputation is also expected to help Chelsea attract more quality signings this summer.
However, Alonso would not have complete control over professional decisions if he joined Chelsea. The current management model of the London club still maintains significant power for the recruitment department and the football leadership group.
Co-owner Behdad Eghbali recently confirmed that Chelsea will change its transfer strategy by adding 2-3 experienced players instead of continuing to focus solely on young talents.
