Amidst escalating great power competition, rising geopolitical hotspots, and pressures on global supply chains, US-China relations continue to be overshadowed by a range of disagreements: from trade and technology to rare earth supplies and the issue of Taiwan (China).
However, the deep-seated ties of economic interests and the global balance of power make it impossible for the two sides to easily separate. In that sense, this meeting is an opportunity for the US and China to seek ways to maintain strategic stability.
The most noteworthy point is not how many disagreements the two sides resolved, but the political message being sent: building a stable US-China relationship capable of managing risks. In other words, Washington and Beijing seem to understand that competition is inevitable, but competition cannot equate to uncontrolled confrontation.
Beijing also has reason to be pleased that Washington has agreed to discuss risk control measures in sensitive areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), healthcare , and pharmaceuticals. While this cannot yet be considered a major policy shift, the fact that both sides are raising the issue of technology risk control in negotiations shows that they are both aware of the growing impact of these emerging fields on security and development.
The cooperative atmosphere shows that both the US and China are striving to prevent disagreements from escalating beyond control, while maintaining the door for dialogue in an increasingly unstable world. Looking ahead, the meeting helps both sides better define the framework for their long-term relationship, which is a blend of cooperation and competition.
The US and China will continue to compete, but both understand that stable bilateral relations are essential to protecting their own interests and avoiding major global shocks.
