Failed first choice twice because of missing 0.5 points
Last June, Doan Ba Trang (born 1996 in Thanh Hoa) graduated as valedictorian of Hanoi Pedagogical University 2 (HUE) with an excellent overall score of 3.64/4.0, ending a 10-year journey as a student at 3 universities.
Not only did this result end a long university journey compared to some other students, it also marked a turning point for Trang when he gave up his military dream to devote his love to the teaching profession.
Trang said that his dream since childhood was to be in the police or army. Meanwhile, Trang's parents wanted their son to choose medicine.
In 2014, the first time he took the university entrance exam, the male student chose both block A and B to enter two schools: Military Medical Academy and People's Security Academy.
However, with 24 points in block A, Trang only had enough points to enter the intermediate security system. In block B, with 26.5 points, the male student failed the Military Medical Academy because he was only 0.5 points short.

The family did not want their child to study at the intermediate security system because they were afraid it would be difficult to find a job. Trang used his exam results to temporarily study at the Agricultural Academy 1 to retake the exam to enter the Army Officer School 1.
In 2015, he retook the university entrance exam for the second time to enter the Army Officer School 1. With a score of 24.5, the male student continued to fail the university entrance exam at his dream school by 0.5 points.
After two retakes of the university entrance exam, Trang's mind became heavier. That year, he decided to choose his second choice, entering the University of Mining and Geology, majoring in Petrochemical Refining.
In July 2020, Trang graduated with honors from the University of Mining and Geology with two majors: Chemical Engineering Technology and Construction Engineering.
During his 5 years studying engineering at the University of Mining and Geology, Trang won many awards, including the second prize in the Chemistry Student Olympiad. In 2019 and 2020, he competed in the National Mechanics Olympiad and won an Encouragement Prize.
“During the days of studying for my dual degree, I was like a machine working at full capacity. On average, each semester, I studied 34-35 credits, from period 1 to period 13, or from about 7am to 8pm,” Trang said.

10 years, 3 universities
During his time as a student at the University of Mining, Trang participated in the academic club, which specialized in teaching students outside of class hours, or assisting weak students, students who wanted to study higher to compete in the national Olympics.
For three consecutive years, the Thanh Hoa student was elected as the head of the academic committee for the club that trains students for national Olympic competitions in various subjects.
“During my teaching time, seeing students achieve their aspirations, I am very happy. Standing on the podium feels like a sacred and noble journey.
After graduating from university, I did not start working right away. Wanting to know if I had a passion for teaching, I decided to stay on as a teaching assistant for a while after graduating and go out to teach for another year,” Trang said.

In 2021, Trang once again asked himself if he really wanted to pursue a teaching career, or was it just a temporary wish? He decided to apply to Hanoi Pedagogical University 2 to major in Chemistry because he really loved it.
Trang passed the entrance exam to Hanoi Pedagogical University 2 through the direct admission system for specialized students and based on academic records. While his friends had already graduated and were working, the male student spent 10 years studying at 3 universities.
“At first, my parents were very anxious because I did not pass the entrance exam for the police and military. For a long time, my father and I did not talk to each other because the more expectations he had, the angrier he became. Actually, he did not understand, I was the saddest when my path to study was not as smooth as many others.
During my time studying at the University of Mining and Geology, my mother always encouraged and supported me, but my father still had not really gotten over it. However, when I graduated from the University of Mining and Geology, it was my father who supported me to continue pursuing a teaching career,” Trang recalled.

One way closes, another opens
Sharing about his journey studying at Hanoi Pedagogical University 2 with friends 7 years younger than him, Trang said that many teachers wondered because he was much older than his classmates.
Having studied at many schools helps Trang have better academic results, along with maturity and growth due to experiencing many ups and downs in life.
It is known that since his first year at Hanoi Pedagogical University 2, Trang stopped teaching to focus on union work, with the position of President of the school's Vietnam Student Association.
Trang said that to do well in union work, one must balance between studying and activities because there are many unnamed things that happen unexpectedly.

In addition to studying key keywords, Trang also participated in private research groups and won the 2025 scientific research award for students in higher education institutions.
Sharing about his future direction, the young man decided to stay at school and strive to become a lecturer because he felt he still owed the school a lot of gratitude.
“Up to now, I have no regrets about giving up my dream of being in the army to pursue education. I think that when one door closes, another will open. I feel lucky to have chosen to study and work at Hanoi National University of Education 2.
I told my teacher that even if I had the chance, I would not go abroad, but would only study in the country because no matter what environment I am in, if I try hard, I will still get worthy results," Trang said.
