Goalkeeper who made a splash at the World Cup is unlikely to play with the Vietnamese women's team

Goalkeeper Tran Thi Kim Thanh, who made a splash at the 2023 Women's World Cup, will likely not be on the field with the Vietnamese women's team in the important match against the Philippines.

The Vietnamese women's team will have an important match with the Philippines in the second round of Group B of women's football at the 33rd SEA Games at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow (December 8) in Chonburi.

Coach Mai Duc Chung's team needs a win to secure top spot in the group, or else a draw to maintain their advantage.

The Philippines also needs a win to keep their hopes of advancing alive. In their opening match, the Philippines lost 1-2 to Myanmar, while the Vietnamese women’s team beat Malaysia 7-0.

However, coach Mai Duc Chung is facing a big problem in terms of personnel as number one goalkeeper Tran Thi Kim Thanh has not yet fully recovered from injury and is doubtful of playing.

Kim Thanh suffered an injury during a training session before the opening match against Malaysia. The goalkeeper, who made a splash at the 2023 Women's World Cup, did not collide with anyone but felt pain, forcing the medical team to intervene immediately.

According to the initial diagnosis of the doctors, Kim Thanh had pain in the back of her left thigh and needed to be closely monitored by physical therapists.

After treatment, Kim Thanh returned to light training but still could not catch the ball so she did not play in the match against Malaysia.

Goalkeeper No. 2 Khong Thi Hang, who replaced Kim Thanh, had no trouble against a weak Malaysia team. But the Philippines, with its tall and high-quality naturalized players, was another challenge, forcing the Vietnamese team to have the best squad.

In addition to Kim Thanh, the Vietnamese women's team can rest assured that midfielder Thai Thi Thao has recovered from injury and played very well in the opening match. Thai Thi Thao's hat-trick, including two classy shots, helped the Vietnamese women's team beat Malaysia 7-0.

Hopefully by tomorrow (December 8), coach Mai Duc Chung will receive good news from goalkeeper Kim Thanh and the medical team.
