Speaking at a press conference after Hoang Anh Gia Lai's 2-1 victory over Ninh Binh on the evening of February 7th, head coach Le Quang Trai of the team from the mountainous region shared quite a bit about the health situation of goalkeeper Tran Trung Kien.
"The defeat of the Vietnam U23 team against China U23 in the semi-finals of the 2026 AFC U23 Championship made Trung Kien very sad. He suffered from insomnia and lost weight very quickly. When Kien returned to the club, I checked and found that he had lost 8kg. The situation at that time was very complicated," said coach Le Quang Trai.
The head coach of Hoang Anh Gia Lai is very worried about Trung Kien because he is a key player for the team from the mountainous region in the V-League. The goalkeeper was advised to rest to recover, but he still tried to put on his gloves and play with determination to overcome difficulties.
"Trung Kien told me that he would put aside his sad memories and dedicate himself completely to Hoang Anh Gia Lai. He is one of the most important players on the team."
"Not only in this match, but in all the matches this season, Trung Kien has performed excellently and deserves the trust placed in him," Coach Quang Trai further revealed.
Tran Trung Kien, born in 2003, was a key goalkeeper for the Vietnam U23 team on their journey to winning the gold medal at the 33rd SEA Games and the bronze medal at the 2026 AFC U23 Championship.
After the tournament in Saudi Arabia, Trung Kien will be too old to play for the U23 team, and will compete for a chance to play for the Vietnamese national team if he is called up again by coach Kim Sang Sik.
