The Ministry of Education and Training assessed that the total income of preschool teachers is not commensurate with the specificity and complexity of their professional activities.

According to the provisions of the Education Law and the Preschool Regulations, the duty of a preschool teacher is to care for, educate and nurture children from 3 months to 6 years old. This is an age that requires caregivers and educators to be highly focused throughout the time the child is at school to ensure the safety of the children.

At this age, children are hyperactive and have low concentration, so teachers must invest a lot of time to create flexible and creative lessons that attract children's attention.

In addition, preschool teachers work 6 hours a day, but in reality, due to the nature of their job and the demands of parents, preschool teachers often have to pick up children early and drop them off late. In some cases, teachers work directly at school from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., which means that the actual working time can be up to 9-10 hours a day. If there is only one child left at school, the teacher must wait for the parent to pick them up before they can go home.

On the other hand, compared to teachers at other levels, preschool teachers are under more pressure from professional activities, expectations from children's families and society. This directly affects the physical and mental health of teachers.

Although the professional activities of preschool teachers are more specific and complex than those of teachers at other levels, the income of preschool teachers compared to other levels is the lowest.

With current regulations, preschool teachers have a starting salary coefficient of 2.10, 35% allowance, total income of about 6.63 million VND/month.

Meanwhile, primary school teachers have a total income (with starting salary) of nearly 7.4 million VND/month; secondary school teachers have more than 7.1 million VND/month.

The consequences of the above reality have led to a high rate of preschool teachers quitting their jobs. From August 2023 to April 2024, 1,600 preschool teachers nationwide quit their jobs, accounting for 22% of the total number of teachers quitting their jobs.

The rate of preschool teachers quitting their jobs under the age of 35 is still high, mainly concentrated in economically and socially developed regions, where living standards are higher than in other regions and teachers have many options to change careers with higher incomes...
