According to the General Statistics Office's assessment, the labor market in the first quarter of 2023 continued to maintain its recovery momentum. The labor force and number of employed people in the first quarter of 2023 continued to increase compared to the previous quarter and the same period last year.
Average monthly income of workers increased compared to the previous quarter and compared to the same period last year.
Besides, the unemployment and underemployment rates among working age people decreased compared to the previous quarter and the same period last year.
The number of people aged 15 and over employed in the first quarter of 2023 was 51.1 million, an increase of 113,500 people compared to the previous quarter and an increase of 1.1 million people compared to the same period last year.
The number of unemployed people in the first quarter of 2023 was about 885,500 people, down 12,400 people compared to the previous quarter and down 443,100 people compared to the same period last year.
The unemployment rate of working-age workers in urban areas is lower than that in rural areas (1.31% and 2.34%, respectively).
Thus, the unemployment situation of workers decreased compared to the previous quarter and the same period last year.
Also in the first quarter, the number of unemployed people of working age was about 1.05 million, down 34.6 thousand people compared to the previous quarter and down 65.1 thousand people compared to the same period last year. The unemployment rate of working age people was 2.25%, down 0.07 percentage points compared to the previous quarter and down 0.21 percentage points compared to the same period last year.
The average monthly income of workers in the first quarter of 2023 was 7.0 million VND, an increase of 197 thousand VND compared to the previous quarter and an increase of 640 thousand VND compared to the same period last year.
In the first quarter of 2023, average income of workers increased in all three economic sectors.
However, the first quarter of this year witnessed a decrease in the average monthly income of workers in a number of economic sectors. For example, the average income of workers in the real estate business sector was 10.5 million VND, down 2.6%, equivalent to a decrease of 275 thousand VND.

The average income of salaried workers in the first quarter of 2023 was 7.9 million VND, an increase of 2.6%, equivalent to an increase of 204 thousand VND compared to the previous quarter. Compared to the same period in 2022, the average income of salaried workers in the first quarter of 2023 increased by 7.9%, equivalent to an increase of 578 thousand VND.
Of which, male wage workers have an average income of 8.3 million VND, 1.14 times higher than the average income of female workers (7.3 million VND). The average income of wage workers working in urban areas is 1.25 times higher than that of workers working in rural areas (8.9 million VND compared to 7.1 million VND).
