People in Phu Dien grapefruit growing land (Bac Tu Liem district, Hanoi ) are busy harvesting to serve the 2025 Lunar New Year.
According to the reporter's records on January 3, in the capital of Dien grapefruit (Phu Dien ward, Bac Tu Liem district, Hanoi), gardeners are busy harvesting grapefruit to supply the market in time for the 2025 Lunar New Year.
Mr. Phi Hung, whose grapefruit garden has been planted since 1997, said: Dien grapefruit variety starts to be harvested from the 11th and 12th lunar months, right around the Lunar New Year, so many people from all over come to buy it as gifts.
“Dien grapefruit is usually small, when ripe it is reddish-yellow, the older the grapefruit tree is, the more delicious the segments are, the sweeter it is. A standard grapefruit must weigh at least 1kg, have a color that is yellow to bronze, thin skin, and feel heavy in the hand,” Mr. Hung shared.
Not far from Mr. Phi Hung's garden is the Dien grapefruit garden of Mr. Nguyen Gia Dung's family (owner of Dung Thu garden), about 4 hectares wide with nearly 2,000 grapefruit trees, also in harvest season.
According to garden owners, Dien grapefruit can be preserved under normal conditions for up to 2 months after picking and the longer it is kept, the sweeter it becomes, so it is popular in the market. “Although this year, grapefruit output has decreased compared to previous years due to damage from storm No. 3, the products are sold very quickly and at good prices. For more than a month now, many retailers have come to the garden to see and pre-order products for Tet. The wholesale price at the garden for delicious, beautiful fruits is from 35,000-40,000 VND/fruit, while lower quality fruits cost from 20,000-30,000 VND/fruit,” said Mr. Dung.
Mr. Nguyen Gia Dung said that with about 2,000 grapefruit trees, on average, every year they yield 250,000 fruits, but this year they only yielded about 200,000. However, this year the products sold faster and at a higher price than last year.
Ms. Bui Thi Nga, owner of a 20-year-old grapefruit garden, currently has about 50 trees. "This year, grapefruit prices will increase slightly compared to last year due to increased fertilizer and labor costs," Ms. Nga shared.
