Chợ Lách commune ( Vĩnh Long province) was established by merging Hòa Nghĩa commune, Long Thới commune, and Chợ Lách town, formerly Chợ Lách district, Bến Tre province.

As the capital of plant seedlings and ornamental flowers in Vinh Long province in particular and the Mekong Delta in general, Cho Lach commune has more than 3,000 households producing plant seedlings and ornamental flowers, accounting for about one-third of the commune's population. Located in the heart of the Mekong Delta's rice granary, the commune has almost completely stopped growing rice, with the crop conversion process beginning more than 20 years ago.

According to the People's Committee of Cho Lach commune, the entire commune currently has nearly 3.1 million ornamental flower products serving the Tet market, and so far about 86% of the flowers have been sold (53% at the gardens, 33% at the market).

The flowers and ornamental plants from nurseries in Cho Lach are popular in the market, with orders already placed well. Chrysanthemums, marigolds, and cockscomb flowers have reached 95%; kumquat trees have reached about 90%; and yellow apricot blossoms and bougainvillea have sold about 80% of their production. Overall, Tet flowers are selling better this year than last year, and prices have also increased.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thiem (An Hoa hamlet, Cho Lach commune) said that her family produces many types of ornamental flowers for Tet (Lunar New Year), most notably chrysanthemums. This year, her family has 1,700 pairs of standard-grade chrysanthemum pots that have been pre-ordered at 180,000 VND/pair, and are now being shipped to Hanoi .

Thiểm's family's chrysanthemum garden has begun to bloom, waiting for the truck to pick them up.

Of the nearly 3.1 million ornamental plant products in Cho Lach commune, flowers (chrysanthemums, marigolds, cockscomb, etc.) account for the largest share with 1.8 million products.

The Tet flower season is also a time when many local laborers earn a good income. Currently, Ms. Thiem's family employs nearly 10 people to remove leaves from their flower garden in order to sell them in time for Tet.

Ms. Bui Thi Thuy Lieu said that each day the workers are paid about 200,000 VND (from morning until 2 PM), and if they work overtime until the end of the day, they earn about 300,000 VND.

Each pair of potted Dutch daisies costs an average of about 130,000 VND.

According to the People's Committee of Cho Lach commune, the reference prices for flowers and ornamental plants at gardens this year have increased by about 5-10% compared to last year, averaging 160,000 VND/pair for chrysanthemums, 70,000 VND/pair for marigolds, and 60,000 VND/pair for hanging flowers... Yellow apricot blossoms and bougainvillea have also increased by 5-10% compared to last year.

The dwarf flowering trees (also known as dwarf flowering trees) are also having their leaves removed in preparation for blooming.

Mr. Tran Huu Nghi, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Cho Lach commune, said that the production of fruits, seedlings, and ornamental plants in 2025 will all meet and exceed the set plan. However, the locality also faces the risk of saltwater intrusion, while the local budget is still limited to implement solutions for freshwater storage and salinity control. The commune regularly provides information on weather and saltwater intrusion so that people can be aware and proactively plan their production.
According to Mr. Nghi, the commune aims to develop Cho Lach into a center for high-quality plant seedlings and ornamental flowers, perfecting and developing key seed production processes, and building the Cho Lach ornamental flower brand.
