Taking advantage of the cool weather, Mr. Le Tan Chinh (Binh Dong village, Nghia Ha commune) mobilized family members to plant and take care of the Tet flower crop. This year, Mr. Chinh's family invested money to buy 350 kg of gladiolus bulbs to plant on 3 sao of rice field.
According to his calculations, the flowers will be ready for harvest and supplied to the market right on the occasion of the Lunar New Year 2025. However, to have a good flower crop with good quality is not easy, because gladiolus not only depends on technical factors but is also greatly affected by weather changes.
“With warm sunshine, plants grow quickly, but without sunshine, when it is cold, plants grow very slowly. Early spring has good sunny weather, late spring has lots of rain and wind. From that experience, people choose the planting date,” said Mr. Chinh.
Every year, in the 10th lunar month, Nghia Ha people plant flowers to harvest in December. As a flower with traditional beauty, gladiolus is chosen by many people to decorate for Tet.
Originating from Lam Dong province, gladiolus has been planted in Nghia Ha for nearly 20 years because it is suitable for the weather and soil conditions here. Since then, gladiolus has brought a good income to hundreds of households in Nghia Ha commune.
Every traditional Tet holiday, gladiolus flowers from Nghia Ha commune follow traders to be consumed everywhere, both inside and outside Quang Ngai province.
“Gladioides are the best-selling flowers and are consumed the most during the Lunar New Year. Although the cost of growing gladiolus is quite high, nearly 20 million VND per sao, if everything goes well, you can earn tens of millions of VND, much more than other crops,” said Mr. Phan Thanh No (Binh Dong village, Nghia Ha commune).
However, gladiolus growers also shared that there are many seasons when the weather is unpredictable, so some years the flowers bloom early, other years they bloom too late, not in time for the Lunar New Year, causing farmers to lose crops.
According to statistics, Nghia Ha commune has nearly 40 hectares of flower growing area, providing the main source of income for more than 200 households. In addition to growing gladiolus, households also grow a variety of other flowers such as roses, chrysanthemums, lilies, aster... to meet market demand.
Quang Ngai City has oriented the development of Nghia Ha flower village associated with community tourism to create jobs, increase income for people, and contribute to the successful implementation of the Project on restructuring the agricultural sector associated with building new rural areas in the locality.
Mr. Vo Van Hai, Vice Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Nghia Ha Commune, shared: "The commune identifies flowers as the main crop, and at the same time combines the construction of Nghia Ha flower village to serve community tourism, thereby connecting farmers and the consumer market."
This year's Tet flower crop, in addition to growing flowers to serve the Tet market, farmers in Nghia Ha commune continue to upgrade their flower gardens into tourist attractions, attracting a large number of visitors, contributing to increasing income.
