Northern flower capital races against time for Tet holiday.

As Tet (Lunar New Year) approaches, Me Linh flower village in Hanoi enters its busiest period of the year. Across the flower fields, growers are busy tending to and pruning each branch to ensure optimal growth.

Mr. Tran Dinh Sang, the owner of a rose garden with over 20 years of experience in Dai Thinh commune, said that this year the weather has been relatively favorable, and the flowers are growing well. "Since the beginning of the twelfth lunar month, we've practically been eating and sleeping in the fields. The flowers for Tet (Lunar New Year) must bloom at the right time, so we have to closely monitor them every day, adjust the water and fertilizer, and provide warmth when it's cold to ensure the flowers grow properly," Mr. Sang shared.

Ms. Tran Thi Lan, a flower grower in Me Linh commune, said: "Cut roses and potted roses are selling quite well this year. Customers place orders in advance to pick them up gradually from the 15th day of the 12th lunar month. Some days I have to mobilize the whole family to cut and pack flowers from morning till night."

Besides racing against time, flower growers in Me Linh also have to strategize to ensure their flowers bloom precisely for Tet (Lunar New Year). Adjusting growth through techniques like shading, water restriction, and fertilization is meticulously planned. "If the flowers bloom too early, they only sell at the usual price, but if they bloom right for Tet, the price can be one and a half times, or even double. Therefore, flower growers don't dare to be careless for even a single day," added Ms. Lan.

According to observations at flower gardens and markets, the price of Tet flowers this year tends to increase slightly compared to the same period last year, with a common increase of 10-20% depending on the type and time of purchase. Cut roses in Me Linh currently range from 35,000-45,000 VND per bunch of 10 flowers, an increase of about 10,000 VND compared to last year.

"Prices are slightly higher this year, but input costs have also increased. We only make a profit if the flowers bloom in time for Tet," said one garden owner.

According to many gardeners, orders this year are coming in earlier and in greater quantities than in previous years. Besides traditional sales channels to wholesale markets and flower shops in the city, the number of orders placed through social media has increased sharply. Many garden owners say they finalized orders before the 15th day of the 12th lunar month, especially for potted roses and bonsai roses.
