DTO - On the morning of August 29, a delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) led by Deputy Minister Tran Thanh Nam visited the rice production model under the Project "Sustainable development of 1 million hectares of high-quality and low-emission rice cultivation associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta by 2030" (abbreviated as the Project) at Thang Loi Agricultural Service Cooperative, Lang Bien Commune, Thap Muoi District. This is the first cooperative to pilot the Project in Dong Thap province, with an area of 43.1 hectares and 20 participating households.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Tran Thanh Nam (second from right) surveys the rice production model under the 1 million hectare project at Thang Loi Cooperative, Lang Bien commune, Thap Muoi district.
The model will be implemented in the autumn-winter crop of 2024 (sowing from June 12-13, 2024), using OM18 rice variety, applying sustainable farming processes (cluster sowing, row sowing combined with burying fertilizer; reducing seeds (70kg/ha); "alternating wet and dry" water management...). The estimated average yield is 6.9 tons/ha, the average output is estimated at 300 tons, the profit is 2,255,000 VND/ha (106.34%) higher than the control, especially the income increases by 800,000 VND/ha compared to the control from selling straw after harvest.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Hung - Director of Thang Loi Cooperative, initially, farmers in the Cooperative had a very high consensus in implementing the model, with new farming processes (reducing seeds, fertilizers, fertilizing, bookkeeping, etc.). It is estimated that rice produced in the model will reduce costs by about 30%. Currently, the Cooperative has signed a contract with an output linkage unit, with a market price plus 100 VND/kg. From the effectiveness of the model, more farmers have registered to participate in the model. It is expected that in the 2024-2025 winter-spring crop, the Cooperative will increase the production area to 150 hectares.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Tran Thanh Nam gave a speech at the working session at the People's Committee of Thap Muoi district.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Tran Thanh Nam expressed his excitement with the initial results of the Project implementation at Thang Loi Cooperative, especially the increasing number of farmers applying to participate in the pilot model, which is quite rare compared to previous models. Along with the 30% reduction in production costs, the model's initial formation of a production linkage mechanism was also highly appreciated by the Deputy Minister and requested that the locality continue to monitor and support so that the model continues to be effective.
The Deputy Minister noted that localities, especially the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, are currently implementing the model according to sustainable farming processes, but from the actual farming practices, the model implementing unit needs to monitor, record, develop farming processes, and compile specific documents to serve as a basis for drawing experience and training for agricultural extension staff, farmers, cooperatives, etc. to replicate throughout the province.
Dong Thap is one of five provinces selected by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to pilot the Project "Sustainable development of 1 million hectares of high-quality and low-emission rice cultivation associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta by 2030". Participating in the Project, Dong Thap registered the cultivation area of high-quality rice cultivation in the whole province by 2025 to be 70,000 hectares and by 2030 to be 163,000 hectares, in 8 districts and cities including: Tan Hong, Hong Ngu, Tam Nong, Thanh Binh, Cao Lanh, Thap Muoi, Hong Ngu City, Lap Vo.
