(HNMO) - On the evening of May 30, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will pay an official visit to Vietnam from June 3 to 4, 2023.
This is the first official visit of an Australian Prime Minister to Vietnam. In Vietnam, the Australian Prime Minister will meet with senior Vietnamese leaders and promote Australia’s business andeducation ties. The leaders will discuss measures to promote trade, investment and education cooperation; climate, energy and the environment.
The Australian leader’s visit takes place in the context of strong development of bilateral relations. Since the two countries established a strategic partnership in 2018, the cooperative relationship has entered a new, more comprehensive and substantive phase, achieving a number of outstanding achievements in the past year. Political relations have developed qualitatively through Party, State, Government and National Assembly channels through visits, contacts and exchanges of bilateral delegations.
In 2022, despite being affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, the two sides exchanged 50 delegations at all levels, implementing a number of key bilateral cooperation mechanisms such as the Foreign Ministers' Conference, the first Defense Ministers' Dialogue, defense cooperation consultation, channel 1.5 dialogue and maritime dialogue, consular consultation... Cooperation in the fields of counter-terrorism, security, maritime safety, and cyber security is also of interest.
Economic and trade relations have developed impressively based on prioritizing eight areas of cooperation according to the Enhanced Economic Engagement Strategy (EEES) announced by the two countries' Prime Ministers in November 2021. Notably, Australia increased its official development assistance by 18%, increased its working holiday quota by 30%, and is preparing to implement agricultural labor cooperation with Vietnam. Over the past two years, Australia has supported our country with 26.4 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine.
Cooperation in the fields of security - defense, education - training, health, people-to-people exchange, etc. all achieved positive results. What is new is that science - technology cooperation has become a priority area for the first time, bringing high added value with projects in the fields of emerging technology, digital transformation, high-tech agriculture, etc.
Educational cooperation became a highlight when the two sides signed 20 cooperation documents. More than 22,000 Vietnamese students are studying in Australia and a corresponding number are studying joint education programs in Vietnam.
Australia has also become Vietnam's 6th tourism market.
