Prime Minister: Addressing the consequences of landmines and unexploded ordnance is an urgent and long-term task.

This statement was emphasized by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh at the conference summarizing the implementation of the National Action Program for overcoming the consequences of unexploded ordnance after the war in Vietnam for the period 2010-2025 and outlining future directions and tasks, held on the afternoon of January 13th in Hanoi .

The Prime Minister affirmed that the Party and the State have always paid attention to and identified the work of overcoming the consequences of bombs and mines as a key, urgent, and long-term political task, closely linked to socio-economic development, national construction and defense; focusing resources on overcoming the consequences of war, dealing with bombs, mines, and chemical toxins.

The issuance of Program 504 affirms the great efforts and political determination of the Vietnamese Party and State to quickly eliminate the dangers posed by landmines and unexploded ordnance remaining after the war, restoring a safe environment and peaceful life for the people, and serving the cause of national socio-economic development.

In his capacity as Head of the Steering Committee 701, the Prime Minister highlighted the outstanding results achieved by the program after 15 years.

Based on the results achieved, the Prime Minister emphasized the lessons learned after 15 years of implementing the program, namely the close and decisive leadership and guidance, along with high political determination combined with effective, scientific, and modern implementation methods; and the close integration of addressing the consequences of landmines and unexploded ordnance with development, social welfare, etc.

The head of government assessed that, in the coming period, the task of addressing the consequences of landmines and unexploded ordnance after the war poses a very heavy challenge, aiming to accelerate the pace of addressing landmine contamination and successfully achieve the basic goal of clearing all land contaminated with landmines to a depth of 0.5m by 2045 (5 years earlier than the initial target).

The Prime Minister requested a focus on several key tasks, including continuing to identify the work of addressing the consequences of unexploded ordnance after the war as a profoundly humane, important, and urgent humanitarian task; and continuing to review and improve the system of policies and laws on addressing the consequences of unexploded ordnance to ensure uniformity and comprehensiveness.

The Ministry of National Defence, in coordination with relevant ministries, sectors, and localities, is urgently tasked with finalizing and proposing an action program for the period 2026-2045 to the Prime Minister; urgently implementing the project to enhance the capacity for bomb and unexploded ordnance clearance by 2030 and beyond, and strengthening research and application of science and technology in the work of addressing the consequences of bombs and mines, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh requested.

On this occasion, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh thanked the governments of other countries and international organizations for their cooperation with Vietnam in addressing the consequences of war and landmines.

General Phan Van Giang affirmed that the Ministry of National Defense is committed to proactively and actively coordinating more regularly and closely with ministries, sectors, localities, embassies, and international organizations in Vietnam in developing programs and plans, and identifying practical and effective solutions to accelerate the progress of bomb and mine clearance.

General Phan Van Giang expressed his hope to continue receiving the attention and leadership of the Party and State, the decisive management of the Government, and directly the Prime Minister; he hoped for the involvement of the entire political system from the central to local levels; and greater support and cooperation from the governments of other countries and international organizations to soon make Vietnam a country free from landmine contamination.
