Vietnam futsal team... slow to warm up again

The Vietnamese and Indonesian futsal teams entered the 2024 Southeast Asian futsal finals with high confidence, as both teams had a perfect record. While coach Diego Giustozzi's team defeated Thailand, Australia, Timor Leste, Malaysia and Brunei, their opponent Indonesia also defeated Thailand, Australia, Myanmar and Cambodia.

In their third appearance in the Southeast Asian futsal final, the Vietnamese futsal team chose a cautious style of play. Coach Giustozzi’s players were ready to play long in their own half, limit dribbling and were ready to shoot from a distance to seek luck.

However, Indonesia was the more reasonable team. Coach Hector Souto's team focused on set pieces, constantly having sharp corner kicks and sideline plays, creating scoring opportunities.

In the 8th minute, the net of the Vietnamese futsal team shook. From a free kick situation by a teammate, the ball was shot from afar by the Indonesian fixo. When the entire Vietnamese team was distracted by this shot, Syiahfullah was waiting at the near post to shoot the ball close to the goal, opening the score of the match. The second post moves, taking advantage of the space behind the Vietnamese defense became the ideal path for Indonesia to open the door for Pham Van Tu's goal, in the context that coach Giustozzi's students did not have good physical strength to compete and pursue.

In the rest of the first half, although coach Giustozzi continuously changed the team and rotated the personnel, there was still no difference. Meanwhile, Indonesia played quickly and directly. Their good ability to compete helped the team from the archipelago attack and defend effectively. If goalkeeper Van Tu had not been focused, Vietnam's net would have shaken at least twice.

In previous matches, the halftime break was the key for the Vietnamese futsal team to change tactics and turn the game around. 23 of the 28 goals Vietnam scored in this tournament came after halftime. This is expected to be a weapon for coach Giustozzi to assess the game and recalculate the playing style.

The Vietnamese futsal team played harder in the second half, especially players like Thinh Phat and Ngoc Anh. In the 25th minute, Ngoc Anh had an impressive escape from the pressing with a pass through the line for Minh Quang to face the Indonesian goal. But instead of shooting, number 12 chose the perfect solution of passing the ball sideways, causing the opportunity to pass.

Thinh Phat held the ball and rushed into the middle, then kicked his left foot very hard, but the ball went inaccurately.

The best chance for the Vietnamese futsal team since the beginning of the match appeared in the 35th minute. Doan Phat skillfully dribbled the ball and then crossed for Thinh Phat to face Ahmaz, but with such a favorable opportunity, the Hue- born player could not beat the Indonesian goalkeeper. Before that, Nguyen Da Hai also pressed well to steal the ball from the Indonesian player, but the young player of Thai Son Bac was not balanced enough to finish the goal.

The Vietnamese futsal team played power-play in the last 4 minutes of the match. With 5 players on the attack front, Mr. Giustozzi's students deployed the ball more clearly. In the 37th minute, Gia Hung took advantage of Manh Dung's good pass to escape to face the ball, but his shot could not be scored. Manh Dung added with his left foot and the Indonesian goalkeeper saved the goal again.

However, power-play is a double-edged sword. In the 39th minute, Doan Phat's mistake with a bad pass made the Vietnamese futsal team pay the price. The Indonesian player seized the opportunity to shoot from home, and when the goal was empty, Vietnam conceded the second goal.

Losing 0-2, the Vietnamese futsal team finished second in the 2024 Southeast Asian Futsal Championship.
