Improving the capacity and efficiency of port exploitation in Thua Thien Hue
Vietnam Maritime Administration will soon deploy solutions to improve the effective exploitation capacity of ports in Thua Thien Hue province.
Vietnam Maritime Administration has just worked with Thua Thien Hue province on infrastructure management, transportation, planning and investment in seaport development.
Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Hoang Hai Minh said that in recent times, Thua Thien Hue province has focused on investing in and building offshore infrastructure; in which, focusing on investment projects in port infrastructure, industrial park infrastructure, duty-free zones, etc. to serve production and business development.
The province has proposed development directions and solutions for marine economic development, which are specified in Decision No. 1745/QD-TTg dated December 30, 2023 of the Prime Minister approving the Planning of Thua Thien Hue province for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050.
At the meeting, Thua Thien Hue province reported on the situation, planning orientation and investment in developing the province's seaports. Accordingly, for Phong Dien Wharf Area, according to the report No. 3363/TTr-BGTVT dated March 29, 2024, Phong Dien Wharf Area by 2030 will have a development scale of 8 to 12 wharves with a total length of 1,250 m to 2,620 m, and a throughput capacity of 6.0 million tons to 11.0 million tons.
Regarding Thuan An Port Area, according to Document No. 3363/TTr-BGTVT dated March 29, 2024, by 2030, the current scale will be maintained with 02 wharves and a total length of 185 m, with a throughput capacity of about 1.0 million tons. The channel length is 5.3 km. Currently, the current depth is -3.5 m and the design depth is -4.5 m.
Regarding Chan May Port Area, regarding the container port, according to Document No. 3363/TTr-BGTVT dated March 29, 2024, the development scale is from 8 to 10 wharves with a total length of 2,431m to 3,231m, throughput capacity from 16.1 million tons to 23.0 million tons and from 324,100 to 345,000 passengers.
Thua Thien Hue Province requests the Vietnam Maritime Administration to promptly submit to the Ministry for approval the detailed planning of land and seaport areas of Thua Thien Hue for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, to have a basis for implementing the next steps; direct and urge units to carry out dredging and maintenance of Thuan An maritime channel according to the approved schedule; study and dredge the channel from the edge of the maritime channel to the fishing boat landing site so that when there is a storm or tropical depression, light-weight cargo ships can take shelter at Thuan An fishing port combined with the storm shelter anchorage area.
The province also proposed that the Vietnam Maritime Administration report to the Ministry of Transport to supplement the dredging and maintenance plan for the Chan May Wharf turning basin in 2024 to a depth of -12.0m; invest in upgrading the shipping channel and turning basin in the Chan May area to ensure safety for ships with a tonnage of up to 70,000 DWT, reducing the load entering and leaving the port in the period of 2025-2026.
Mr. Le Do Muoi, Director of Vietnam Maritime Administration, highly appreciated the management of infrastructure, transportation, planning and investment in seaport development of the province, and acknowledged that the province has had orientations to develop Wharf Areas in Thua Thien Hue seaport in accordance with the orientation of socio-economic development, exploiting available potentials and advantages.
Vietnam Maritime Administration accepts the recommendations of the province and will promptly implement solutions to improve the capacity and efficiency of port operations, ensure maritime safety and security, and meet the requirements of effective exploitation of shipping channels, turning basins, and the efficiency of operations and business of ship owners and port enterprises.
