Mrs. NTT (in Gia Kiem commune, Dong Nai province) was hospitalized with severe pain in her left hip and thigh, unable to walk after a fall at home. Notably, the patient had diabetes for many years and had a fractured bone due to a domestic accident a year ago. After examination and X-ray, the doctor determined that she had a fracture of the femur intertrochanteric on the basis of osteoporosis.
Through multidisciplinary consultation and assessment of the patient's overall health, the doctors decided to choose the Gamma intramedullary nailing method under the guidance of the C-Arm irradiation monitor. This is a high-tech technique, considered a suitable solution for elderly patients with many underlying diseases. The advantage of this method is to minimize invasiveness and ensure high mechanical stability when combining bones.
During surgery, the doctor only needs to open a small incision of about 2-3cm to insert the Gamma nail into the spinal canal without having to widen the fracture, thereby limiting soft tissue dissection. The C-Arm system helps the doctor to accurately correct the fracture position, helping to reduce the risk of blood loss, limit infection and bring high aesthetics after surgery. The Gamma nail helps to firmly combine the bone, support natural bone healing, avoid the risk of displacement in the intertrochanteric area, the area that bears a large load during movement.
After surgery, the old lady was able to sit up and move around gently. The patient is continuing to undergo physical therapy. Compared to other bone fusion methods, the patient's recovery time is expected to be about 2 months earlier.
