Tran Thanh's Tet movie "Mai" created controversy when it was favored by theaters with dense screenings, even causing other movies to postpone their schedules.
As expected, Mai – directed by Tran Thanh – quickly topped the box office charts. On the first day of release, the film earned more than 22 billion VND according to Box Office Vietnam (an independent box office monitoring unit).
This achievement helped Mai set a record for the film with the highest opening weekend revenue in history, surpassing Mrs. Nu's House.
However, Mai 's revenue raised questions for many people because the film was rated T18 (forbidden to audiences under 18 years old). Moreover, the work was favored with many screenings every day while other films only had a small number of screenings.
Number of screenings is dense
According to Box Office Vietnam statistics, on the first day of release, Mai sold about 270,000 tickets in 3,554 screenings.
The number of screenings of the film is three times higher than the film in second place on the chart, Meeting the Boss (directed by Nhat Trung), eight times higher than Bright Lights (Hoang Tuan Cuong) and 11 times higher than Tea (Le Hoang).
During the three days of its release, Mai continuously covered the airwaves, taking up all the prime screening times. On social media, many viewers expressed their concerns about Tran Thanh’s film being given so many screening times a day: On average, there was a screening every half hour or an hour.
Tran Thanh's movie "Mai" is said to be squeezing other movies in theaters.
This is not the first time Tran Thanh’s film has raised suspicions about squeezing screening times. Last year, Mrs. Nu’s House also caused controversy among audiences because it was given special treatment by theaters. As a result, the project set a record for revenue, becoming the highest-grossing Vietnamese film of all time with over 450 billion VND.
Most recently, the film Dat rung phuong Nam produced by Tran Thanh also caused a stir for the same reason. The film still had a high number of screenings despite its popularity cooling down and its revenue increasing slowly after many weeks of release.
In fact, the coverage strategy of Tran Thanh's film is not too difficult to understand. Because the project was announced by the director with a very high investment level, up to 50 billion VND. This number is rare compared to a work in the psychological and emotional genre. Therefore, to make a profit, the film must at least double, or even triple, its revenue.
Last year, Tran Thanh also revealed that Dat Rung Phuong Nam would only break even if it exceeded the 100 billion VND mark. So this time, the number he and his team expect must be much higher.
Normally, the number of screenings of films will be increased or decreased by the theaters depending on market demand. Good and popular films will be given priority by the distributors over less attractive films.
With Tran Thanh’s name, Mai naturally became the most watched project this Tet season. However, the obvious difference in the number of screenings shows that the distribution between films is not even. Audiences also do not have many choices when going to the cinema for entertainment.
The two movies "Gap lai chi bau" and "Tra" both have much lower screening times than Mai.
A Vietnamese film had to postpone its schedule.
Tran Thanh's Mai not only overshadows Vietnamese films but also causes difficulties for foreign films.
The animated film Spy x Family or the blockbuster Argylle Super Spy only has about 450-550 screenings nationwide. The projects are not scheduled at good times, making it difficult for ticket buyers. If they want to see the film, they have to buy tickets for the earliest morning show or the latest show of the day.
When going to the cinema, audiences can only choose to watch Tran Thanh's movies or have to arrange time to watch other movies at the right time slot.
Most recently, the Bright Lights crew had to announce a postponement of the screening date because it could not achieve the expected revenue. Up to now, the film has only earned over 700 million VND, very low compared to Vietnamese films shown during Tet.
With the desire to reach a wider audience, the producer decided to postpone the film to mid-March.
Under the post announcing the postponement of the screening schedule of the movie Sang Den, many comments mentioned Tran Thanh: "I think this is the right decision because Tran Thanh's movies are dominating the screening schedule", "There are only a few screenings a day, the rest are Tran Thanh's movies, so stopping is the right thing to do"...
Tran Thanh's name is constantly mentioned when the movie "Sang Den" changes its release date.
This is a rare case where a movie is shown in theaters for two days and then its release date is postponed. Last year, the movie "Super cheat meets super muddy" (directed by Vo Thanh Hoa) also predicted the situation and postponed its release date to "avoid" Tran Thanh's movie "Nha Ba Nu".
This year's Tet movie season has more positive signs than last year when there were four Vietnamese films released at the same time. But in reality, all the attention was on Tran Thanh's Mai .
Not to mention the quality, the unimpressive performance of other Vietnamese films at the box office is still a pity for filmmakers.
Box Office Vietnam believes that Tet Nguyen Dan is the most exciting movie season of the year for the Vietnamese market. However, with the unequal number of screenings, this is no longer a place where “everyone is happy”.
On the contrary, it will be a boring movie season when only one work dominates the box office.
