Since the beginning of May, the prices of vegetables, tubers, fruits, etc. at traditional markets in Phan Thiet City have been increasing sharply, some items have increased 3 times compared to last month.
Every day, Mrs. Nguyen Thu Trang (Phu Thuy ward) visits the market as a habit, so she knows the changes in food prices in the palm of her hand. Prices are rising, many families have to tighten their spending, calculating how to balance daily meals for Mrs. Trang in particular and consumers in general is a spending problem for families with average income. Ms. Trang said: “If last month I bought herbs and lettuce for only 20,000 VND/kg, now it has increased to 35,000 - 45,000 VND/kg, cauliflower has also increased from 15,000 VND to 25,000 VND/kg; squash, pumpkin, luffa 25,000 VND/kg, leafy vegetables have also increased from 20,000 VND to 30,000 - 35,000 VND/kg; green beans 30,000 VND/kg... In particular, the highest increase is tomatoes, which used to be a cheap fruit, only 10,000 - 15,000 VND/kg, now it has tripled, some places sell it for 40,000 - 50,000 VND/kg”.
Ms. Hang - a trader specializing in importing Da Lat products to sell at Phu Thuy market shared: "Tomato growers keep reporting continuous price increases, from January to April, the price increased from 7,000 - 10,000 VND/kg. From the end of April until now, it has increased rapidly from 10,000 VND to 20,000 VND/kg and is currently nearly 35,000 VND/kg. Therefore, the retail price of tomatoes to consumers fluctuates from 40,000 - 50,000 VND/kg. We do not dare to buy a lot of goods, because the high price makes consumers hesitate. Previously, we also imported the same amount of vegetables and tubers as now but sold them all in one day, but now we have to sell them for 3 - 4 days before importing new goods."
Traders at Phu Thuy market added that due to the prolonged hot weather, poor plant growth, reduced output, leading to reduced supply, traders at wholesale markets increased import prices. Although food prices have increased, traders at the markets have no goods to sell, because output has decreased, so the wholesalers have divided the goods equally among traders at each place. In addition, due to high vegetable prices and low purchasing power, some traders have limited their imports, making the vegetable market not as abundant and rich as before.
Not only vegetables, tubers, and fruits are "skyrocketing", but the prices of pork, beef, and seafood are also starting to increase. It is the fishing season, but the output is not abundant, the fishing boats near the shore are unpredictable, sometimes they can catch a few dozen kg/day, sometimes they lose money. In particular, during the recent April 30 - May 1 holiday, the price of seafood increased from 15,000 - 20,000 VND/kg depending on the type because the demand for goods at restaurants, hotels, and service points increased while the supply was limited. Ms. Mai - a seafood trader in Phan Thiet market said that the price has increased since the holiday because the source of goods is not abundant, the offshore fishing boats have not entered the main season, there are boats going but the output is not much. Currently, cobia is priced at 185,000 VND/kg whole, 285,000 VND/kg sliced; Sliced mackerel 250,000 VND/kg, whole fish 180,000 VND/kg; sea shrimp from 230,000 - 350,000 VND/kg; fresh squid from 220,000 - 350,000 VND/kg; squid 220,000 - 500,000 VND/kg depending on size; crab from 250,000 - 450,000 VND/kg, silver pomfret, pomfret, and bream 150,000 - 180,000 VND/kg... Preparing for the peak summer tourist season, seafood prices will certainly increase again because currently, restaurant and hotel owners are looking for sources of reserve goods."
In addition, according to the survey, the current price of live pigs is still around 70,000 VND/kg, so the price of pork in the markets has increased by 15,000 - 20,000 VND/kg. The main reason is that family-scale farmers have suffered losses in the past 2 years, so they no longer have the ability to restore their herds in the context of high piglet prices. Large-scale livestock companies have also suffered huge losses in herd numbers due to the outbreak of African swine fever in 2023, which has not yet recovered. Currently, pork in the market fluctuates between 120,000 - 170,000 VND/kg, depending on the type. The price of beef is also high, type 1 costs 270,000 - 280,000 VND/kg depending on the market...
With the situation of rising food prices, supermarkets in Phan Thiet City have launched many promotional programs to reduce prices of some fresh foods, vegetables, etc. Accordingly, Bach Hoa Xanh has a program of fresh fish at good prices with cobia only 220,000 VND/kg, mackerel priced at 190,000 VND/kg, fresh salmon head only 59,000 VND/kg. Or Lotte Mart Phan Thiet always has preferential prices at the pork counter with ham, cutlets, minced meat... ranging from 109,000 - 119,000 VND/kg or VietGAP vegetables and fruits... all at good prices. In addition, Co.op Mart Supermarket also continuously has promotional programs at the fruit, root, and fruit counter... to stimulate and support consumers during the time of escalating prices.
