The fire at the Wang Fuk Court apartment complex in Tai Po was first detected at 2:51 p.m. on November 26 and quickly spread to seven of the eight buildings in the complex, sending thick columns of smoke billowing into the air, the South China Morning Post reported.
Initial images from the scene showed bamboo scaffolding outside some of the building's apartments quickly burst into flames, before being completely engulfed.

As of the morning of November 27, the fierce fire in 4 out of 7 buildings in the Wang Fuk Court apartment complex had been controlled, while the remaining 3 buildings were still burning on the upper floors of the 31-storey building.
The fire has killed at least 44 people and left 279 missing. As of 10am this morning, 68 injured people were being treated in hospital, of which 16 victims were in critical condition.
Comprehensive rescue work after the fire is underway.

In connection with the apartment fire, three people, including two directors and one consultant of the contractor responsible for renovating the buildings, were arrested for manslaughter. They were accused of using substandard materials for scaffolding nets and sealing windows with foam, causing the tragedy because these flammable substances allowed the fire to spread quickly.
