The Wall Street Journal reported on October 24 that American billionaire Elon Musk has been in regular contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin since late 2022, and the Kremlin has responded officially.

The Wall Street Journal quoted US intelligence sources as saying that technology billionaire Elon Musk, currently the world's richest person, was in regular contact with President Putin after Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine.
The two men continued to communicate this year, the newspaper reported, after Musk stepped up his criticism of US military support for Ukraine and actively supported former President Donald Trump's White House campaign.
During the early stages of the war in Ukraine, billionaire Musk provided the Starlink satellite internet system for free to the Kyiv government army. Starlink internet was considered an important tool that allowed Ukraine to respond to Russian troops on all fronts during this time.
However, the relationship between Mr. Musk and the Ukrainian authorities has cooled over time. The American billionaire has not only stopped providing internet equipment to Ukraine but also restricted the Kyiv government from using the Starlink network for military drone operations.
In early 2024, Ukrainian military intelligence accused the Russian military of using Musk’s satellite services on the battlefield in Ukraine. Musk has denied the allegations but has not responded to a request for comment on the Wall Street Journal article.
Today (October 25), the Kremlin denied that President Putin maintains contact with the American billionaire.
"This is completely untrue, it is really fake news reported by the above newspaper," Reuters quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
Mr Peskov said that President Putin had contacted Mr Musk before 2022. They spoke by phone and discussed future technologies, according to the Kremlin spokesman. However, the two sides never spoke again after that.
