How does Tiktok "addict" users?

TikTok uses AI to analyze user data

So why and how does Tiktok become so "addictive" to young people? According to the analysis of Mr. Vu Ngoc Son, Technical Director of Vietnam National Cyber Security Technology Company (NCS), Tiktok's artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm analyzes user data, guesses what users want to see and suggests content, making viewers feel satisfied and gradually "addicted".

Mr. Vu Ngoc Son said that Tiktok selects videos for users based on many factors. First is user interaction, for example, users like or share, the accounts you follow, the comments you post and the content you create; next is video information, including details such as captions, audio and hashtags; the language you are using, country, device type...

“Behind that is an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm that analyzes this data to predict what users want to see next, thereby suggesting appropriate content. To do this, Tiktok offers test videos to see users' reactions, shown in how users interact with that video, the time, the number of times users watch it again... From this data, AI will synthesize and classify users into groups of users with different interests," Mr. Vu Ngoc Son further analyzed.

According to Mr. Vu Ngoc Son, other platforms such as Youtube and Facebook have also applied. However, the advantage of Tiktok is that the duration of each clip is very short, in the same amount of time, users can watch more clips on TikTok than on Youtube and Facebook.

After the analysis is complete, Tiktok will collect more user reactions in the same amount of time as input for AI machine learning. In other words, Tiktok's AI learns faster and more accurately because of the larger input data. In addition, Tiktok has an algorithm for deploying new content in a way that, every time a new content appears, the algorithm will distribute it to a certain number of people to measure interactions.

If the percentage of viewers who like the video is high, it will continue to be distributed to a larger number of people exponentially. Therefore, the more unique, strange, and view-catching a content is, the faster it will spread. This will also create conditions for videos with dirty, toxic content to spread without control. With the development of BigData and AI technology, online platforms can easily know what users want and like, thereby providing content that they like, feel suitable, and feel satisfied without the user having to do anything.

“Tiktok is the most worrying because the duration of a Tiktok clip is very short, this raises concerns that if you are addicted to Tiktok, your ability to concentrate in life will decrease because the brain is used to being satisfied in just a few dozen seconds, this time is too short compared to a normal activity in life,” Mr. Vu Ngoc Son added.

How to not get addicted to Tiktok?

Besides the negative effects, cybersecurity expert Vu Ngoc Son said that whether a tool is good or bad depends on the user, but if it facilitates bad things more easily, it will need to be controlled and adjusted to survive. Especially for children, there needs to be a solution to prevent the negative effects of this platform on children. In fact, besides negative information, cross-border platforms and social networks in general have positive information. However, due to "crowd psychology", negative information is always spread faster and leaves serious consequences. In fact, the worse and more toxic the information is, the more people think it is closer to life and authentic, so they respond more.

Regarding some violations of Tiktok with bad, offensive content, and false information on this platform, Mr. Le Quang Tu Do, Director of the Department of Radio, Television and Electronic Information (PTTH & TTĐT) said that in the past 3 years, Tiktok has grown very strongly with a rapidly increasing number of users in the Vietnamese market, but this development does not go hand in hand with the responsibility of managing and maintaining a safe and healthy platform for users. From 2022 to present, the Tiktok platform has had a lot of content against the Party and State, violating the law. More seriously, Tiktok also uses automatic content distribution algorithms to create toxic trends, negatively affecting young people and users. There are no effective control measures, leading to the situation of many fake, counterfeit, and poor quality goods of unknown origin being sold widely on Tiktok shops. There is no strict management to allow some idols to use their platforms to spread deviant, non-standard, nonsense, and uncultured content. There are no effective measures to control copyrighted content, especially movies; There are no measures to manage Tiktok users' arbitrary use of other people's private images, seriously violating people's right to privacy.

Regarding solutions to these issues, Mr. Le Quang Tu Do said that in the near future, the Ministry will synchronously deploy legal, economic, technical, diplomatic, and communication solutions... to require cross-border platforms to comply with Vietnamese law; organize an interdisciplinary inspection team to comprehensively inspect Tiktok's operations in Vietnam; coordinate with relevant ministries and branches to comprehensively assess the impact and influence of Tiktok on the community, especially young people; improve the effectiveness of the scanning tool; develop a communication plan to promote and form healthy online cultural behavior trends; coordinate with the Ministry of Industry and Trade to manage the e-commerce service provision activities of Tiktok Shop in Vietnam.

At the press conference providing information on the activities of the first 3 months of 2023 and the plan to implement the key tasks of the Ministry of Information and Communications, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Thanh Lam emphasized: To prevent cross-border platforms and malicious channels from violating Vietnamese law, we will follow the plan to block the flow of money on cyberspace so that it does not flow into malicious content. Businesses do not put their money into malicious content. Cross-border platforms and malicious channels are allowing viewers to donate to channels with offensive and deviant content, so we will have to reconsider the cooperation from Vietnamese payment channels to these platforms.
