Experts with extensive experience in food poisoning from the city's health sector agreed that bacterial infection was the main cause of this poisoning.

On the morning of October 4, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health held an urgent meeting after a child died of suspected poisoning from eating cream puffs at the Palm Heights apartment building (Thu Duc City).

After listening to the working group report on the results of the investigation into cases with symptoms of food poisoning and the hospitals reporting on the status of admission and treatment of food poisoning cases, experts with extensive experience in food poisoning from the city's health sector unanimously agreed that bacterial infection was the main cause of this poisoning incident.

This is a case of mass food poisoning, with more complex developments and is harder to detect than previous cases of mass food poisoning, which often occur in schools (nursery schools, kindergartens, etc.). The food causing the poisoning in this case is most likely from cream puffs (excluding grilled sausages and drinks used in the Mid-Autumn Festival party).

The cause of poisoning after eating cream puffs is likely to be bacterial contamination, as all cases of poisoning have similar symptoms related to food poisoning such as fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, high white blood cell count, high CRP (blood test to detect bacterial infection in the body).

“The important thing is that there was a case where a person did not attend the Mid-Autumn Festival party organized by the Palm Heights Apartment Management Board but still got food poisoning and had the same symptoms after eating cream puffs of the same brand and same address where the cakes were purchased. Thus, the possibility of the cream puffs being contaminated at the place where the Mid-Autumn Festival party was held was ruled out, which had been contaminated before,” the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health informed, adding that the cause of the infection, experts confirmed that they needed to wait for the results of bacterial isolation being processed by the Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Public Health.

Previously, as reported by SGGP, on the afternoon of September 29, Palm Heights apartment building (Thu Duc City) organized a Mid-Autumn Festival for children of residents and some employees working in the building. The organizers gave gifts and cakes to the children.

Among these gifts, the apartment bought 230 cream puffs worth more than 3 million VND from Givral bakery in Binh Thanh district to give to the children. On September 30, a 6-year-old child showed symptoms of vomiting and died on the way to the emergency room; on October 1, 5 children who ate the cakes had symptoms of diarrhea, vomiting, and fever. By the morning of October 2, many children had similar cases.

As of the morning of October 4, there are still 17 children being treated at Children's Hospital 1, Children's Hospital 2, Le Van Thinh, and Nhan Dan Gia Dinh, all in stable health.
