Despite being touted as a groundbreaking device, the future of the ultra-thin iPhone Air is facing major changes. According to a report from The Information , Apple has canceled plans to launch a second-generation iPhone Air in the fall of 2026 and has even "drastically scaled back production of the first version."
The Information said that according to the original plan, Apple aimed to announce a new iPhone Air in the fall of 2026 with significant improvements, including a lighter design and better battery capacity, along with vapor chamber cooling technology like the iPhone 17 Pro series.
However, another source said that instead of canceling it completely, Apple could still launch this new iPhone Air model as early as spring 2027.
The iPhone Air is Apple's thinnest smartphone. However, according to a survey cited by the WSJ, only 1 in 10 buyers of 2025 iPhone models chose the Air in the first weeks of its release.
On the internet, many people complained about the camera, sound quality, battery and price of the iPhone Air. According to Apple's website, the iPhone Air is always available when ordered, while other models in the iPhone 17 series have a maximum wait of 3 weeks.
Bloomberg tech critic Mark Gurman even advised against buying the device, saying the $1,000 + price tag doesn’t match the specs. Social media reviews have also been harsh, based on real-life experiences with the device.
In terms of structure, to achieve a thinness of 5.5 mm, the iPhone Air had to make many trade-offs, such as only equipping a single rear camera and a smaller battery, to the point that Apple had to launch a dedicated wireless charging battery pack specifically for this device.
