The United States does not need to block the global spread of its artificial intelligence (AI) chips and technology to manage national security risks, a White House official said on May 13.
This signals a more open stance on exporting related products to trusted allies like Saudi Arabia.
Speaking at the Saudi Arabia-US Investment Forum in Riyadh as President Donald Trump began a tour of the Gulf states, David Sacks, a White House AI and cryptocurrency expert, said the Trump administration has just announced it will rescind the so-called AI Diffusion Framework, arguing that the policy restricts the spread of US technology around the world.
This information was given by Mr. Sacks after Washington announced plans to cancel and amend regulations from the time of former President Joe Biden to limit global access to AI chips.
The White House's latest comments mark a shift from recent restrictions on the transfer of data center technology.
This also reflects the growing US interest in strengthening technological ties with Middle Eastern partners that are pouring billions of dollars into AI infrastructure and aiming to become a hub for emerging technology outside the “land of the stars and stripes.”
The AI Diffusion Framework was previously released in January this year, a week before the administration of former President Joe Biden left office. This policy aims to maintain America's leading position in the field of AI./.
