The MacBook Pro line with OLED displays has been rumored for a long time, but its launch is now said to be delayed from late 2026 to early 2027. The initial reason given is a global chip shortage and difficulties in mass-producing this type of display.
According to The Elec , the specific problems stemmed from the complexity of manufacturing a large-sized OLED panel (14 inches or 16 inches). However, these hurdles are believed to have been completely overcome, to the point that Samsung Display is reporting a production success rate of over 90%.
Some individual stages in the screen structure even reach 95% completion. In fact, even 90% is considered by the industry to be a sufficient level for mass production.
"At this stage, with the glass production just beginning, it will take at least a month to ramp up mass production for customers. After that, it will take at least another month to proceed with deliveries," an internal source revealed.
Samsung Display is now expected to begin shipping 8.6-generation OLED panels from June onwards. According to reports, the company will produce a total of approximately 2 million of these panels throughout 2026.
Besides the complexity, the difficulty in mass-producing OLED screens for MacBook Pro compared to iPhones partly lies in the size barrier. Additionally, these types of computer screens typically need to operate for longer periods each day than mobile phones.
Furthermore, Apple requires its suppliers to use a technology called dual-layer OLED. This means stacking two OLED panels on top of each other, resulting in superior display quality and significantly longer overall lifespan.
However, in essence, the dual-layer OLED structure is far more expensive than the conventional single-layer type, and the manufacturing process is also exponentially more complex. Therefore, Samsung Display reportedly refused to produce this type of screen in the early 2020s, because at that time, only Apple had made such stringent demands regarding the stacking technology.
However, by March 2022, Samsung reportedly reconsidered and began developing this technology. This advanced display technology then made its debut on Apple's iPad Pro M4 series, officially launched in May 2024.
