Amid fierce fighting along the Donetsk front, the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed on October 14 that its offensive units had made an important advance in the direction of Pokrovsk, when the village of Novopavlovka was officially “liberated” from the control of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. This is considered a key point in Ukraine’s eastern defense system. According to the published military report, the capture of Novopavlovka brought about 4 km² of territory under full Russian control. This advance extended the flank and deepened the encirclement around Pokrovsk, and created a springboard for further attacks on the southeastern outskirts of the city.
Pokrovsk (formerly Krasnoarmeysk) is now considered one of Ukraine's important command and logistics centers in the Donetsk region. Approaching this area could shake Kiev's entire defense network along the eastern rear axis. Forward sources said the Russian assault force was approaching the village of Gnatovka, just a few kilometers from Pokrovsk. Gnatovka is considered an extended suburb, even within the administrative boundaries of the city on some military maps. If Gnatovka falls, the eastern defense line of Pokrovsk will be deeply penetrated, directly threatening the urban center. A Russian military official said the offensive from Novopavlovka to Gnatovka was creating a pincer movement to encircle a large Ukrainian force entrenched in the southeast of Pokrovsk. “Enemy units in this area have been almost completely cut off from supplies and safe retreat routes,” he said.
On the ground, Russian mechanized units, supported by artillery and attack drones, have been steadily closing in on scattered Ukrainian resistance points. Many secondary roads connecting Pokrovsk with Konstantinovka and Kurakhovo have been blocked or are under direct fire from Russian artillery. Notably, Russian drone forces continued to play a key role in the campaign. UAV pilots launched a lightning attack on two temporary enemy deployment points, including an industrial complex used as an ammunition depot and command center. The attack began with high-speed FPV UAVs, which broke through the defense line and suppressed the target. Then, Lancet suicide aircraft delivered the final blow, hitting the field command center. Two Ukrainian armored vehicles used to transport troops into Pokrovsk were completely destroyed. Local sources added that the UAV attack caused significant human losses on the Ukrainian side. Some of the surviving soldiers were evacuated from the fighting area by civilian vehicles, while Russian tactical aviation continued to bombard alternate routes leading to Pokrovsk.
Russian military experts believe that the capture of Novopavlovka is not only a geographical victory, but also has a strong tactical and psychological impact. It helps the Russian army put direct pressure on Pokrovsk - considered the "gateway" to protect Ukraine's western Donetsk defense cluster. Meanwhile, Ukrainian media admitted that the situation around Pokrovsk was becoming “very difficult”, with many frontline units lacking artillery ammunition, thinned in manpower and communications disrupted by heavy Russian electronic attacks. However, the Ukrainian General Staff announced that it was maintaining its defense capabilities and preparing for counterattacks in some peripheral areas.
Military experts predict that if the Russian offensive continues, Pokrovsk will become the next hot spot after Chasov Yar. The capture of Novopavlovka is likely just the opening act of the fierce siege phase of the Donetsk campaign.
