The breakthrough of the Ukrainian army (AFU) in Volchansk, which was reported a day earlier, is in full swing, Russian news agency Rybar reported. Locals said that the organized resistance of the AFU had been broken, the Russian army (RFAF) had crossed the Volchya River and started fighting in the area of the railway station. According to Russian intelligence, the defense line here is managed by the 127th Territorial Defense Brigade and the 57th Motorized Infantry Brigade of the AFU. In addition, Volchansk is also home to Ukrainian MLRS rocket artillery systems, which regularly shell the Belgorod area.
However, this strength also contains the weakness of the Ukrainian army. In the current situation, up to four thousand Ukrainian troops can be pushed into the so-called "fire pocket" at the same time; while the two flanks of the city are relatively weak. It is worth noting that the day before, the RFAF crossed the border of the Kharkiv region in another area. They took control of the village of Degtyarnoye, where fighting began last spring. As a result, the AFU units in Volchansk are under threat of encirclement. Given the situation, it is possible that the Ukrainian troops will begin to withdraw from their positions, unless they receive major reinforcements. Ukrainian soldiers in Volchansk complained that their situation in the area of the village of Tykhoye, east of Vovchansk, had deteriorated significantly. Currently, Russian troops have occupied a significant part of the village and AFU units were forced to retreat to Vovchanskiye Khutors, the Military Summary channel reported. At the same time, an AFU communications officer was really confused why the AFU General Staff did not inform about the change in the situation in the Vovchansk region. The indifference or deliberate concealment of information by the AFU leadership made the AFU officer extremely indignant, he suggested sending senior officers to the front line so that they could “taste” the fierceness of the battlefield. Meanwhile, information from the direction of Vovchansk about a breakthrough of the RFAF is taking place in several places at once. At the same time, Russian assault units are outflanking the Ukrainian army in Volchansk, preventing the Ukrainian army from plugging the gap in its defense, using redeployed reserves.
Since the beginning of this week, in fighting in Vovchansk, Russian troops have pushed Ukrainian troops out of several defensive positions southwest of the city and taken control of an area of about 1.5 square kilometers. In particular, Ukrainian troops were pushed out of positions in the Cherkassky Alley area, the tactical situation in the bus station area was improved, and a small bridgehead was prepared on the southern bank of the Vovchya River. In case of success south of Vovchansk, the Russians could at least control the fire of the enemy's most important supply routes, including those to Stary Saltiv and Velykyi Burluk. In turn, another RFAF thrust was advancing from Melove to Velykyi Burluk. The battles for Volchansk began last summer, following a surprise attack by the RFAF on Kharkov Oblast; the AFU had to commit large forces to defend the city, turning the small town into a fortress. Over the course of several months, fighting in Volchansk would occasionally subside, then flare up again with renewed vigor.
AMK Mapping reported that in the direction of Velykyi Burluk on the Kharkov front, Russian troops advanced and broke through AFU positions along the Vovcha River on a wide front west of Vovchansk. Russian troops crossed the river at the destroyed railway bridge and entered the western part of the town and took control of positions in residential areas and forests. The Military Summary channel reported that the RFAF is currently concentrating its forces to attack Ukrainian troops entrenched in the Volchansk industrial zone. The Volchansk industrial zone has been subjected to numerous heavy Russian bombs, including FAB-3000 bombs, over the past year; making the AFU's defense here much more difficult due to the heavy damage. However, due to the size and fortified structure of the Soviet-era industrial zone, it could still be used as a stronghold for Ukrainian forces. The RFAF infiltrated the industrial zone and established positions in the northern buildings, while other forces occupied the outer buildings west of the railway tracks. In addition, Russian troops entered the western suburbs of Vovchansk and captured positions on Vatutina, Kyivskyi and Lesi Ukrajnki streets, as well as in the nearby forest.
The Russians have now crossed the Vovcha River from the Hatyshche area, taken over the weakly defended AFU positions on the southern bank of the river in the vast forests, and advanced south, west, and east to expand the bridgehead, linking it with the bridgehead in Vovchansk itself. In total, the RFAF has gained about 5.06 square kilometers. (photo source: Military Review, Ukrinform, Kyiv Post).
