Community spirit and neighborly love in the digital age

The story of neighborly love and community spirit seemed to have faded away in the bustling and vibrant urban life. However, it is precisely in the stressful environment of life and dense population that relationships between people and families become even more important.

Recently, Dien Hong ward organized a seminar on the theme "Promoting the values of community spirit in the digital age," highlighting lessons learned and proposing many effective methods and practical solutions.

The distance behind the doors

The panel discussion opened with a short skit titled "Turn Off the Internet - Turn On Human Kindness." The story takes place in an apartment building where many residents have lived on the same floor for years but rarely see each other. And when they don't know or understand each other, small conflicts can easily escalate into major disputes.

Things changed when the power went out in the apartment complex. Residents rushed to the common area, where they had the opportunity to meet and chat. From this chance encounter, families gradually came to understand each other better, sharing long-standing problems and accepting feedback from their neighbors. Neighborly relationships strengthened, misunderstandings were resolved, and empathy and sharing replaced conflicts, all for the common good, fostering a better life in modern times.

Ms. Truong Thi Minh Hanh, Vice Chairman of the Dien Hong Ward People's Committee, shared: "I myself live in an apartment building, and I haven't spoken to my neighbor in six years. This is not unusual; in urban life, everyone has their own life, and the need for neighborly connection is almost nonexistent. This distance easily leads to conflicts, such as people keeping dogs and cats causing unsanitary conditions, or people singing and having fun loudly causing disturbances... The apartment building has a social media group for communication, but a few text messages can't convey all the frustrations and feelings. The inability to meet and discuss things clearly has led to unresolved issues, causing misunderstandings and further distancing residents from each other."

Promoting the value of community spirit and neighborly love.

Dr. Vu Thi Phuong, Head of the Department of Cultural and Arts Management at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Culture, stated: “Technology helps us expand the space for connection and communication, enabling rapid dissemination of information. However, no matter how intelligent technology becomes, it cannot replace genuine emotions. Meeting, greeting, and exchanging smiles still create a much more effective social connection. Many situations can be resolved more quickly through face-to-face interaction and resolution.”

Agreeing with Dr. Vu Thi Phuong's opinion, Mr. Nguyen Kim Trung, Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Dien Hong Ward, said: "Connecting through technological platforms such as neighborhood Zalo groups, resident groups, and online community information channels is essential due to their convenience and speed. To announce something, messaging online is still the fastest and most convenient. But that's just pure information. To foster sharing, mutual support, and responsibility among people living in the community, building direct activities is very necessary."

As an example of neighborly solidarity, a representative from neighborhood 33, Dien Hong ward, shared a story from their area. There was a family consisting of an elderly couple, both around 80 years old, whose children didn't live with them, and the wife was paralyzed on one side due to a stroke. Knowing their situation, everyone in the neighborhood spontaneously reminded each other to look after their household. One day, the husband suddenly fell ill, and neighbors quickly divided up the tasks: some took him to the hospital, while others stayed home to care for his wife. This neighborly spirit isn't something far-fetched; it's simply about small things like this, yet it beautifully demonstrates the genuine affection of the people in their community life.

Aiming to strengthen community cohesion in the area, Ms. Truong Thi Minh Hanh said that Dien Hong ward will continue to expand community activity models such as green, clean, and beautiful alleyways and streets; litter-free neighborhoods, alleyways, and streets; cultural and artistic movements; building libraries and reading spaces in residential areas; safe children's playgrounds; green, clean, and beautiful apartment buildings; and working together to sort waste to protect the environment… Through these community activities, people will have a stronger bond, understand each other, and contribute to building a united, civilized, compassionate, and sustainably developing community.
