Mountainous province brings candidates closer to high school graduation exam site

VnExpressVnExpress22/06/2023

Many northern mountainous provinces bring students from remote areas with difficult travel to eat and stay near high school graduation exam sites.

On June 20, a week before the exam took place, Mr. Le Manh Truong, Chief of Office of the Departmentof Education and Training of Lao Cai province, said that the education sector coordinated with local authorities to review the number of candidates living far from the high school graduation exam locations, and requisitioned dormitories of boarding schools, semi-boarding schools, and continuing education centers to serve as places for them to eat and rest.

Mr. Truong explained that this is to avoid the situation where candidates live too far away and arrive late, leading to them skipping the exam and not being able to graduate.

"This activity has been done in Lao Cai for many years," said Mr. Truong.

This year, Lao Cai has more than 7,000 candidates taking the graduation exam at 24 locations. According to the plan, on the afternoon of June 26, students from far away will be gathered near the exam site to prepare for procedures the next morning. During the days when candidates eat and rest at the gathering site, teachers will cook and prepare food. According to Mr. Truong, this funding is mainly from socialized sources. Parents can proactively contribute and participate in cooking, but it is not required.

Some northern mountainous provinces also do the same as Lao Cai.

According to statistics, 88% of Bac Kan’s population is ethnic minorities. This year, the province has only nearly 3,000 students taking the high school graduation exam. They and their families are also arranged accommodation and meals near the exam site.

Thai Nguyen has a plan to pick up and drop off candidates in difficult areas that may be affected by rain and floods on their way to the exam site. Meanwhile, Bac Giang province has requisitioned public housing and mobilized residents around the exam site to provide food and accommodation for 21,000 students and their families if they need it.

The 2023 high school graduation exam will take place on June 28-29 with more than one million candidates. Candidates must take three independent tests: Math, Literature, Foreign Language, and two combined tests: Natural Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) and Social Sciences (History, Geography, Civic Education for candidates studying the general education program; or History, Geography for candidates studying the continuing education program).

Last year, the graduation rate was 98.57%.
