In Round 9 of the 2026 MLS season, LAFC disappointed by drawing 0-0 with Colorado Rapids at their home arena, BMO. Although they still temporarily hold third place in the Western Conference, the team's performance has caused concern among fans.
This was a match where LAFC were almost completely ineffective in attack, especially in the first half when they failed to register a single shot. Statistics reveal an alarming performance: LAFC only controlled the ball 27%, took 5 shots (1 on target), and had a meager expected goals (xG) of 0.21, all the lowest figures for the team since the start of the season.
The focus of attention shifted to forward Son Heung-min. In the match against Colorado Rapids, Son was deployed as an attacking midfielder but almost "disappeared" on the field, not taking a single shot before being substituted in the 76th minute. His disappointment was evident as the South Korean international shook his head and looked dejected as he left the pitch.

Last season, Son contributed 12 goals and 4 assists for LAFC, making a more than expected debut for his new team. But since the start of this season, the situation has reversed for Son as he has yet to score a goal in MLS. His only notable highlight was his 4 assists in the domestic league match against Orlando City on April 5th.
LAFC coach Mark dos Santos had to defend Son, arguing that the main reason was the packed schedule which left the team with insufficient time for training. LAFC had to play 13 matches in 42 days, forcing the coaching staff to constantly rotate the squad.
The strategist admitted that the lack of connection between the attacking players is a major problem. He emphasized that Son and his teammates are playing too far apart, limiting their ability to coordinate. In addition, psychological factors also play a significant role, especially for strikers when their goal-scoring form declines.
Although there is still plenty of time for improvement, if LAFC doesn't find a solution for Son soon, they could completely lose their advantage in the MLS race.
