Greenwood is having health problems. |
Amidst a wave of questions, coach Habib Beye stated that the decision was not based on tactical factors or form, but primarily on Greenwood's physical condition. Despite being the top scorer this season with 25 goals in 41 matches, the English striker has been plagued by a persistent injury.
According to the coaching staff, Greenwood sustained the injury during a tense match against Lille a few weeks ago. At that time, he was repeatedly subjected to aggressive tackles, particularly from Hakon Haraldsson. Despite trying to play in the last two matches, the pain has not subsided.
"Mason has been closely monitored since the beginning of the week. He's been significantly hampered by the injury sustained in the Lille game. In the last two matches, he played in pain and we couldn't take any risks," coach Beye shared.
Greenwood was only brought on for the last 30 minutes of the match against Nice, but he couldn't help Marseille secure all three points as the team drew 1-1 at home.
The result puts Marseille under continued pressure in the race for a Champions League spot. The port city team currently sits in sixth place with 53 points, four points behind the top four.
In the crucial final stages of the season, Marseille will face Nantes, Le Havre, and Rennais. Coach Beye hopes Greenwood will quickly regain his best form to help the team overcome the challenging final stretch.
