In Hanoi , an art workshop has introduced a collection of horse figurines, all handcrafted, notably featuring 24k gold-plated pieces priced from tens of millions of dong. The works are cast according to designs by sculptor and artist Vu Dung, combining modern artistic language with traditional materials and techniques such as lacquer and bronze casting.
The process of crafting a 24k gold-plated horse figurine requires many steps. First, the artisan creates a clay model to perfect the horse's form and expression. Then, a negative mold is used to transfer the model to durable materials such as copper or composite. Once the body is complete, the product undergoes meticulous surface treatment before entering the 24k gold plating and gilding stage – a step requiring skilled craftsmanship and high precision to ensure the gold layer is evenly distributed, adheres firmly, and enhances the sculpted details.
In the collection, the artwork "Saint Giong's Galloping Horse" exemplifies the fusion of craftsmanship and cultural value. Inspired by the legend of Saint Giong, the horse is depicted galloping, its hooves raised high, representing a powerful and resilient spirit. Details such as the flowing cloak and the ivory bamboo are meticulously crafted, adding depth to the artwork, while the golden hue conveys a message of prosperity and success in the new year.
According to Mr. Tran Quy Van, representative of the crafting team, the process of creating a gold-plated horse mascot, from concept and prototype testing to completion, usually takes several months. The finished product is priced between 10 and 30 million VND, depending on size, version, and level of material quality.
As Tet approaches, the workshop produces a limited quantity to ensure the quality of each piece, while also meeting the growing demand from customers for collectible art pieces that carry auspicious meanings for the Year of the Horse 2026.

The artisans meticulously clean and refine each detail of the mascot after the casting process, ensuring the accuracy and seamlessness of the form.

The process of coating and finishing the surface of the mascot is done manually, requiring intense concentration and skill from the craftsman.

The artisans use specialized brushes to manually apply gold leaf to the figurines, creating a metallic sheen and adding aesthetic depth to the artwork.

Thin layers of gold are carefully applied, ensuring the surface of the figurine achieves a uniform and sharp reflectivity.

The horse mascot models have been sculpted and surface-coated, preparing for the final finishing stage at the workshop in Hanoi.

The details of the horse mascot's head and body clearly show the intricate patterns and the sheen of the metal coating.
