On the morning of May 6th, VTC News reporters observed that along the Rung Sac road (Can Gio district, Ho Chi Minh City), numerous teams of technicians were conducting geological surveys for the Ben Thanh - Can Gio Metro project. The work was carried out urgently and continuously at many points along the route.

At each drilling location, approximately five personnel, including drillers, engineers, sampling technicians, and field supervisors, work together. Specialized equipment is deployed and operated continuously to ensure the survey progresses on schedule.

According to a sampling technician, the work is divided into shifts throughout the day, starting from 7 am to 11 am, with a lunch break, then continuing from 1 pm to 5 pm. Each borehole has a standard depth of about 80m, and the execution time lasts from 2 to 3 days depending on geological conditions.

"In areas with soft geological strata like clay, where the penetration index is low, the drilling progress is faster. When we reach about 70m, the technical team will report back for analysis and evaluation before continuing to ensure that the technical requirements are met," the technician said.

Workers and technicians are carrying out geological drilling under the scorching sun.

The Ben Thanh - Can Gio Metro project is nearly 54 km long, with a total investment of over 102,430 billion VND (excluding land clearance costs of approximately 13,000 billion VND paid by the state budget). The groundbreaking ceremony took place on December 19, 2025.

The route starts at the 23/9 Park area (Ben Thanh ward) and ends at a plot of land approximately 39 hectares in size in Can Gio commune.

Upon completion, the project is expected to contribute to the socio -economic development of the southern coastal area of Ho Chi Minh City, while also strengthening connectivity in the Southeast region.

In terms of technical scale, the line is designed as a double track, with a standard gauge of 1,435 mm, electrified, and a maximum design speed of up to 350 km/h.

Following the route, from Ben Thanh station, the line runs along Ky Con street, crosses Ben Nghe canal to Vinh Khanh street, connects to Nguyen Tat Thanh street, then continues through Nguyen Van Linh and Nguyen Luong Bang streets and crosses Rach Dia river into Nha Be district.

The route continues across the Soài Rạp River to Bình Khánh commune, running parallel to and crossing the Bến Lức - Long Thành expressway, then following the Rừng Sác road corridor towards the sea. The chosen route passes through the buffer zone of the Cần Giờ Biosphere Reserve, avoiding encroachment on the core zone to ensure environmental protection requirements are met.

In Phase 1, the project is expected to include two main stations, Ben Thanh and Can Gio, along with a large-scale operations center (OCC) in Can Gio. The project is being invested in by VinSpeed (a subsidiary of Vingroup ) under a BOO (build-own-operate) model. Ho Chi Minh City is currently carrying out land compensation and clearance work, aiming for handover in November 2026.

The investor plans to start construction in 2026 and put it into operation in 2028.
Besides the Ben Thanh - Can Gio Metro line, Ho Chi Minh City plans to start construction on many more urban railway projects in 2026 to complete its public transport network.
Specifically, the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway line, approximately 42 km long, is designed as a double track line with a 1,435 mm gauge and a speed of 120 km/h, comprising 20 stations. It is currently being prepared for investment under the PPP (Public-Private Partnership) model, with construction expected to begin before June 30, 2026 and be completed in 2030.
Phase 1 of Metro Line 6 (Tan Son Nhat - Phu Huu) is also undergoing a feasibility study, with construction expected to begin in 2026 and be completed in 2030.
In addition, urban railway line No. 1 (Binh Duong New City - Suoi Tien), 31.6 km long and entirely elevated, along with line No. 2 (Thu Dau Mot - Ho Chi Minh City), approximately 24.2 km long, are also under study and investment preparation, with the goal of starting construction in 2026 and completing it between 2030 and 2032.
