On May 16, the Court of Appeal of the French city of Paris upheld the three-year prison sentence for former President Nicolas Sarkozy on charges of corruption and abuse of power.
The court said Mr Sarkozy was given a two-year suspended sentence and ordered to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet for the remaining year instead of serving time in prison. He was also banned from holding public office for three years.
Earlier in 2021, a lower court found Mr. Sarkozy guilty of bribing judge Gilbert Azibert, using his influence in exchange for inside information about an investigation into allegations that he received illegal payments from the heir to the L'Oreal cosmetics group during his 2007 presidential campaign.
Mr Sarkozy, 68, who served as French President from 2007 to 2012, has denied any wrongdoing.
