A recent survey of more than 1,000 companies by digital association Bitkom found that for the third consecutive year, Germany lost more than 200 billion euros to cybercrime. Bitkom Chairman Ralf Wintergerst said the German economy is a very attractive target for cybercriminals and hostile countries.
About three-quarters of businesses surveyed said they had suffered a digital attack in the past 12 months, down from 84% a year earlier, a positive sign that defensive measures are working.
When asked “do cyber attacks threaten the survival of businesses?”, for the first time in history, 52% said “yes.” According to the survey, the rates two years ago were 45% and 9%, respectively.
Of those companies that had been attacked, 70% reported sensitive data being stolen, up 7% from the previous year. Similarly, 61% reported digital communications being monitored, up 4% from the same period.
According to the Chairman of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Mr. Sinan Selen, the response to this growing threat is to significantly strengthen cooperation between partners, detect and react more quickly to attacks, and constantly adjust defense mechanisms.
