Tom Cruise continues to make 2 box office blockbusters

As the 'Mission: Impossible' series ends (the final part hits theaters in Vietnam on May 30), Tom Cruise is revealing his next blockbuster projects.

In a recent chat with Today Show Australia , Tom Cruise said he and his crew are working on a sequel to Top Gun: Maverick (2022) and the racing film Days of Thunder (1990).

"Yeah, we're thinking and talking about different stories, what we can do. It took me 35 years to make Top Gun: Maverick so we have to have a good discussion about Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick ," Tom Cruise said.

The Hollywood star continued: "There are so many other films that we are actively working on right now. I'm always shooting one, preparing another and releasing another. I just finished a new film with director Alejandro González Iñárritu, who did The Revenant , and we're releasing that. It's an incredible experience ."

Top Gun: Maverick became a box office hit, grossing $1.49 billion worldwide . Days of Thunder grossed $157 million worldwide by the end of its theatrical run – a record in 1990.

Tom Cruise was first in talks to return for Days of Thunder 2 in November 2024 with Top Gun: Maverick producer Jerry Bruckheimer. The first installment follows Cole Trickle (Tom Cruise), an outcast race car driver who is recruited to join a NASCAR team led by former racing legend Harry Hogge (Robert Duvall).

Variety reported in January 2024 that Top Gun 3 is in development at Paramount. Top Gun: Maverick co-writer Ehren Kruger will pen the script, and the studio hopes to bring back director Joseph Kosinski for the third installment.

Tom Cruise's next project is an untitled film directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu. In October 2024, Variety reported that filming would begin in the UK as early as November of that year. Along with Cruise, the film's cast includes Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, and Sophie Wilde.
