General Secretary To Lam re-elected

General Secretary To Lam was unanimously elected as General Secretary of the 14th Party Central Committee at its first meeting this morning, January 23rd.

According to the press release, on the morning of January 23, at the Party Central Headquarters, the 14th Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam held its first meeting to decide on particularly important issues, marking the beginning of the new term.

General Secretary To Lam convened the Conference, delivered the opening remarks, and on behalf of the Conference Presidium, chaired the Conference proceedings. Based on strict adherence to the Party Charter, working regulations, election regulations, and related contents, the Conference highly promoted the spirit of unity and responsibility, and effectively implemented the principle of democratic centralism.

The first meeting of the 14th Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam completed particularly important tasks, electing the Politburo , the General Secretary, and the Secretariat.

The conference heard reports on the proposed appointments to key leadership positions in the Party and State, and provided input on personnel for the position of Standing Member of the Secretariat, elected the Central Inspection Committee, and elected the Chairman of the Central Inspection Committee.

General Secretary To Lam was elected to the position of General Secretary of the 13th Party Congress from August 2024; President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Chairman of the National Defense and Security Council (in 2024); Secretary of the Central Military Commission (from August 2024); Head of the Central Steering Committee on Prevention and Combat of Corruption, Waste, and Negative Phenomena

General Secretary To Lam was born in 1957 in Hung Yen province. His political theory qualifications are at the advanced level. His professional qualifications include: Professor, Doctor of Law; and a graduate of the People's Security University.

General Secretary To Lam is a member of the Politburo of the 12th, 13th, and 14th terms; a member of the Central Committee of the Party of the 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th terms; and a Member of the National Assembly of the 14th and 15th terms.

On January 22, 2026, at the 14th National Congress of the Party, he was elected as a member of the 14th Central Committee of the Party for the term 2026-2031.

On the morning of January 23, 2026, at the first meeting of the 14th Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, he was elected a member of the 14th Politburo and subsequently elected General Secretary of the 14th Party Congress.
