As of May 2025, South Korea is Vietnam's largest investor with a total registered capital of 94 billion USD, with 10,203 projects, accounting for 23.5% of the total number of projects and 18.1% of the total foreign direct investment registered in Vietnam.
South Korea also ranks second in development cooperation with a commitment to support US$4 billion by 2030. Bilateral trade turnover will reach US$81.5 billion in 2024, up 7.3% compared to 2023. Vietnam has invested in 112 projects in South Korea with a total capital of US$37.4 million.
The two sides maintain the mechanism of the Vietnam-Korea Joint Committee on Science and Technology Cooperation at the ministerial level. In October 2023, the two sides agreed on joint research cooperation from 2025 in six areas: information technology, biotechnology, climate technology, nanotechnology, digital transformation, and new energy/renewable energy.
The two sides are actively cooperating to continue implementing the second phase of the Vietnam-Korea Institute of Science and Technology (VKIST) project. Large Korean high-tech corporations are also investing in the National Innovation Center (NIC), such as SK providing capital and research programs for Vietnamese enterprises, and Samsung establishing the Samsung Innovation Campus research lab.
South Korea has consistently been one of the largest tourist markets for Vietnam. In 2024, 4.6 million South Koreans visited Vietnam, and in the first five months of 2025, 1.9 million visitors, ranking second among the tourist markets to Vietnam.
Regarding local cooperation and people-to-people exchanges, about 100 pairs of local-level relations between the two countries have been established. The total value of Korean non-governmental aid to Vietnam in the 2023-2024 period is about 29.4 million USD, mainly focusing on the fields of economic and social development, education, training, and solving social problems. Multicultural families are increasingly a bridge between the people of the two countries.
In 2024, the total number of Vietnamese people living and working in Korea will be about 320,000, an increase of 50,000 people compared to 2023.
Of these, nearly 100,000 are international students, over 100,000 are laborers of all kinds. The descendants of the Ly Hoa Son and Ly Tinh Thien families are estimated at about 1,000 people.
Previously, on July 29, at the Party Central Committee headquarters, General Secretary To Lam received Mr. Park Chang Dal, Special Envoy of South Korean President Lee Jae Myung.
Special Envoy Park Chang Dal emphasized that President Lee Jae Myung always considers Vietnam a leading important partner in implementing foreign policy in the region; hopes that the two sides will further increase high-level exchanges and contacts; promote economic, trade and investment cooperation to develop substantially, effectively and sustainably.
General Secretary To Lam expressed his high agreement with the opinions of Special Envoy Park Chang Dal; affirmed the consistent policy of the Party and State of Vietnam to always attach importance to and wish to develop cooperative relations with the Republic of Korea to a new height, in a practical, effective and long-term manner; suggested that the two sides promote comprehensive, practical and effective bilateral cooperation on the basis of political trust between the two countries and close relations between businesses, localities and people of the two countries.
