The aid includes the first shipment of a precision-guided glide bomb called the Joint Standoff Weapon, which has a range of up to 130 kilometers. This medium-range missile significantly upgrades the weapons Ukraine is using to attack Russian forces, allowing Ukraine to strike from a safer distance.
The precision-strike bomb would be dropped from a fighter jet. Biden has not said he would allow Ukraine to use US missiles to strike targets deeper in Russia.

The bulk of the new aid, $5.5 billion, will be distributed before the end of the U.S. fiscal year on Sept. 30. Another $2.4 billion is under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, which allows the administration to buy weapons for Ukraine from companies rather than withdrawing them from U.S. stockpiles.
This will provide Ukraine with additional air defense systems, drones and air-to-ground munitions, as well as strengthen Ukraine's defense industrial base and support its maintenance requirements, Mr. Biden said.
According to the plan, the US President said the Department of Defense will refurbish and provide Ukraine with an additional Patriot air defense system and more Patriot missiles.
Mr. Biden has ordered the Pentagon to expand its training program for Ukrainian F-16 pilots, including helping to train 18 more pilots next year.
President Biden said supporting Ukraine is a top priority for the United States. "That is why today I am announcing increased security assistance to Ukraine, as well as a range of additional actions to help Ukraine win this fight," said Biden, who leaves office in January.
