The US has recently deployed more forces to the Caribbean and carried out airstrikes on vessels accused of drug trafficking. In the past few months, the US military has destroyed about 20 vessels, killing nearly 80 people.
Mr. Maduro has repeatedly warned that Venezuela is facing the most serious threat of invasion from the US in the past 100 years, while the US has accused the Venezuelan government of not doing enough to fight drug trafficking.
Recently, Venezuela has carried out a "massive mobilization" of military personnel, weapons and equipment to counter the US's increased naval and military presence in the Caribbean Sea.
According to Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López, the deployment of Venezuelan forces is part of “Independence Plan 200” – a combined military-civilian strategy to mobilize the regular army, militias and police to protect the country.
The exercise also involved the Bolivarian Militia, a civilian reserve force created by the late President Hugo Chávez. The Bolivarian National Armed Forces currently has about 123,000 troops.
