At this time, 9th grade students in many localities are urgently reviewing and preparing to enter the 10th grade high school entrance exam, which is quite stressful due to a certain level of competition.

In fact, after finishing middle school, students have many suitable directions for studying and training, not just one path of entering a public high school.

Balance in training structure

Currently, after graduating from junior high school, students are oriented to main streams such as continuing to grade 10 at public or private high schools, learning a trade combined with general education at vocational colleges or junior colleges, studying high school under the regulareducation program, or entering the labor market.

Streamlining students after lower secondary school into different learning paths is extremely necessary for each individual as well as the whole society, contributing to adjusting the structure of training levels and occupations, meeting the needs of the labor market, in line with economic restructuring in the context of international integration, while creating opportunities for learning and lifelong learning for each individual, towards building a learning society.

This streaming guides students to choose a learning path that suits their abilities, strengths, aspirations, and circumstances.

Information from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training shows that in 2023, the whole city will have nearly 110,000 9th grade students, of which nearly 13,000 students did not register for the 10th grade entrance exam.

With a 70% rate of junior high school graduates entering public 10th grade, it is expected that about 20,000 students in the city will not be admitted to public high schools.

These students can attend private high schools, intermediate schools, vocational colleges or continuing education centers.

In addition, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has just issued a Plan to implement the vocational education development strategy for the 2023-2030 period, with a vision to 2045.

By 2030, the city strives to focus on improving the quality and effectiveness of vocational education to meet the national demand for skilled human resources, attracting 45%-50% of junior high school and high school graduates to the vocational education system and having at least 60% of the workforce retrained and regularly trained.

Also in the Southeast region, the key economic zone in the South like Ho Chi Minh City, in 2023, Binh Duong province has nearly 29,000 students completing grade 9.

Implementing student streaming, it is expected that 70% of students after junior high school will study at public high schools in the province.

In the Mekong Delta, Dong Thap province announced that it will not hold the 10th grade entrance exam for high school in 2023. However, the province will consider recruiting about 70% of junior high school graduates to study at public high schools.

The remaining students will study at vocational training or at regular education institutions, high schools that organize teaching according to regular education programs.

Thus, whether organizing exams or admissions, each locality will have students who, after graduating from junior high school, will not study at public high schools but will be divided into streams to study at continuing education centers, vocational education facilities, etc.

Correct orientation, reduce pressure for students

Regarding the orientation of learning and training for students after junior high school, managers, education and psychology experts believe that teachers and parents should give many opportunities, suggestions, and time for students to share and express their wishes and dreams for their next learning path.

Along with that, parents and teachers need to analyze, advise, contribute to orienting and encouraging their children before the exam, helping them reduce pressure, be steadfast in their plans and choose the next path of study.

Families and schools need to avoid putting pressure on students from two extremes: having too high expectations or lacking confidence in students' abilities and efforts before exams.

Mr. Tran San has a child studying in grade 9 at Le Van Tam Secondary School (Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City). He shared that after researching the enrollment quotas of public high schools, he did not ask his child to register for schools that were considered "famous" but only analyzed them so that his child could decide, choose to register and adjust his wishes within the time frame announced by the Department of Education and Training of the city.

He suggested that if he did not pass the entrance exam to high school, he could apply to vocational school, majoring in culinary and kitchen management, which he showed great talent for.

According to Mr. Tran Anh Tuan, Vice President of Ho Chi Minh City Vocational Education Association, many parents now have the right perspective on career orientation suitable to their children's abilities.

However, in society there is still a situation where one has to finish high school and then go to university to be successful.

In fact, for the labor market, each level of education has a function and meets certain needs. Each student needs to clearly understand their abilities and determine that success does not mean choosing a higher level of education, public or private education, focusing on cultural studies or choosing a vocational path.

A learning path and training suitable to each student's ability combined with efforts will bring success in the future./.
