Tottenham could lose a significant source of revenue if they are relegated. |
Following their 1-1 draw against Leeds in the 36th round of the Premier League on the morning of May 12th, Spurs are in serious danger of relegation. With a massive debt of £851 million, leaving the top flight of English football would be a real disaster for the London club.
Financial expert Stefan Borson estimates the minimum loss would be £145 million if Tottenham are relegated. Revenue from television rights is expected to plummet, from the current £200 million to a mere £55 million. In addition, De Zerbi's team would face a further deficit of £75 million from domestic competitions and £100 million in revenue from UEFA.
Meanwhile, Touchline claims the potential impact could be even worse than what Borson claims. It estimates Spurs could lose up to £250 million in revenue overnight.
Spurs' sponsorship deals will be cut by 20% immediately upon relegation. Matchday revenue is also projected to drop by around 40%. Missing out on the Champions League will cost the club an additional £70 million.
Tottenham are currently only two points above West Ham in the relegation zone. De Zerbi's team have their fate in their own hands, but the challenge in the final two rounds is immense, as they face Chelsea away and Everton at home.
