As a model that dominates sales in markets like India or Vietnam, the 7-seat SUV Toyota Fortuner is about to face a sad end in Australia. Toyota Australia has just officially confirmed that Fortuner will end production in this country in mid-2026, closing its life cycle 11 years since its launch.
The main reason for this "death" decision is that sales cannot compete. Data for the first 10 months of the year shows that Toyota Fortuner only sold 2,928 cars. This number is far behind direct competitors, when Ford Everest sold 21,915 cars and Isuzu MU-X sold 12,499 cars.

Looking back at history, the Fortuner's best annual sales result was just 4,614 units, achieved in 2022. In that same year, the Everest sold 10,314 units and the MU-X 10,987 units. Notably, the more expensive model, the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, achieved sales of up to 20,710 units.
The Fortuner’s average annual sales for the 2016-2024 period are a mere 3,481 units. The model is consistently outpaced by the more expensive Prado, even in 2024 when Prado supply is disrupted for a generational changeover. Toyota will deliver just 3,042 Fortuners in 2024, compared to 9,802 Prados.

Commenting on the decision, Sean Hanley, Toyota Australia's vice president of sales and marketing, acknowledged that customer tastes were changing. He said the Fortuner was a great product and had found a loyal following, but the company had decided to discontinue production to focus on other models.
Toyota says Australian customers have begun to shift to other models in its product range, with many returning to the Hilux pickup or moving up to more premium SUVs like the Land Cruiser and Land Cruiser Prado.

The seven-seat Fortuner was launched in Australia in 2015, sharing the same platform as the Hilux and a 2.8L turbo-diesel engine. It was positioned as an alternative to the petrol-only Kluger SUV and had a cheaper starting price than its rival, the Ford Everest.
However, despite being cheaper, Fortuner has never really succeeded in competing with Everest, a model also based on the Ranger pickup chassis but positioned by Ford close to the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.
While the Fortuner will be discontinued, Toyota Australia is preparing for the launch of the next-generation Hilux, after the new-generation Land Cruiser Prado arrives here in late 2024.
