Ho Chi Minh City spends more than 22 trillion VND to renovate black spots of traffic jams and flooding.

At the 5th session (special session), the 10th term of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council held on November 14, delegates approved the proposal to adjust the investment policy for the project to renovate and expand Ton That Thuyet Street and the green park along the Te Di Canal, passing through 3 wards of the old District 4: Vinh Hoi, Khanh Hoi and Xom Chieu.

Along the Te Canal, a park will be built to serve the people.

According to the resolution of the City People's Council, Ton That Thuyet Street will be widened to 26m, with a total length of about 3,608m. Of which, Ton That Thuyet Street will be renovated and widened to 3,423m, a new bridge over Nguyen Kieu canal will be built and the planned road section No. 1 will be 185m long.

The project also includes the construction of embankments to protect the banks of Te Canal and Nguyen Kieu Canal, the renovation and expansion of Nguyen Kieu Bridge on Ben Van Don Street, and the improvement of the drainage system, lighting, and green parks along Te Canal.

The total investment was adjusted from VND 2,203,535 billion to VND 5,554,478 billion, adjusting the project from group B to group A. Thus, compared to the initial investment scale, this project has increased its capital by more than VND 3,400 billion.

The implementation time for expanding this route is extended to 2029, including completion and putting the project into use in 2028; final settlement in 2029.

The project to widen Ton That Thuyet Street, to solve this traffic jam black spot, has been stalled for the past 10 years. Previously, the People's Committee of the old District 4 proposed adjusting the scale and increasing the capital to more than 5,600 billion VND. The road will be nearly 4 times wider than it is now and a new bridge and a park along the canal will be built.

Also at this session, the City People's Council approved two canal renovation projects, with a total cost of 17,000 billion VND, with the hope of completely solving the current flooding situation in the South of Ho Chi Minh City.

Accordingly, the project to dredge and improve the environment of Ba Lon canal, 7.4km long, passing through Binh Dong ward and Binh Hung commune, has an investment of more than 9,200 billion VND; of which compensation, support and resettlement costs account for 6,682 billion VND, construction and installation costs are about 2,000 billion VND.

The investment plan includes dredging the entire route; building 9.9 km of embankment to protect the bank; opening a new 12-18 m wide road; building Ba Lon 2 Bridge (40 m wide, 58 m long) over National Highway 50; and an infrastructure system including sidewalks, trees, lighting, drainage and boarding and exiting stations.

The resolution requires implementation time in the period 2026 - 2029, put into use in 2030, contributing to increasing drainage capacity for the 920-hectare basin, reducing flooding, preventing landslides and beautifying the urban area in the South.

The dredging and environmental improvement project of Ong Be canal drainage axis in Chanh Hung ward and Binh Hung commune has a total capital of more than 7,785 billion VND. The project includes dredging 4.2 km of canal; building a 4.5 km long embankment; opening a new road 12 - 16 m wide, more than 2.4 km long; along with a system of railings, sidewalks, drainage, lighting, trees and boarding and disembarking wharfs.

When completed, the project will increase drainage capacity for the 470-hectare area, improve the environment, create ecological space and promote socio -economic development in the South.

This project also requires implementation from 2026 to 2029 and put into use in 2030.

Currently, Ho Chi Minh City still has 398 rivers, canals and streams that have not been renovated, with about 39,600 houses that need to be relocated. According to the target by 2030, the city will relocate 50% of the houses on and along the canals, equivalent to about 20,000 houses, of which the old District 8 area alone accounts for more than 15,000 houses.
