The Ho Chi Minh City Project Management Board for Investment and Construction of Transportation Works (Transportation Board) has officially submitted to the Department of Construction the proposed cross-sectional scale for the project to renovate, upgrade, and expand Nguyen Thi Dinh Street. This is an important preparatory step to synchronize technical infrastructure with the Cat Lai Bridge project and solve the traffic congestion problem at the eastern gateway of the city.

Overview of the area where Nguyen Thi Dinh Street is planned to be expanded.
The Ho Chi Minh City Project Management Board for Investment and Construction of Transportation Works (Transportation Board) has recently sent a document to the City Department of Construction, reporting on the proposed scale of the cross-section of Nguyen Thi Dinh Street.

Details of the plan to expand to 14 lanes.

According to the proposal, the nearly 2-kilometer stretch of road from the My Thuy intersection to the Cat Lai ferry terminal will be widened from its current 24-meter width to 60-73 meters. This expansion will not only serve inner-city traffic but also directly connect to the Cat Lai port and the future Cat Lai bridge.

The cross-section of Nguyen Thi Dinh Street is proposed to be widened.
The section of Nguyen Thi Dinh Street, nearly 2 km from My Thuy intersection to Cat Lai ferry terminal, is proposed to be widened from 24 m to 60-73 m.

The design plan is divided into three specific segments based on the topographical features and connecting structures:

  • Section 1 (From My Thuy intersection to the beginning of the Cat Lai bridge access road): Approximately 260 m long, with a road width of 60 m. The scale includes 12 lanes for motorized vehicles and 2 lanes for mixed traffic, totaling 14 lanes.
  • Section 2 (Abutment and underpass area of Cat Lai Bridge): Approximately 630 m long, with a maximum cross-section of up to 73 m. Two median strips will be installed here for the two sections of the Cat Lai Bridge, combining 6 lanes for motorized vehicles and 2 lanes for mixed traffic running under the main route.
  • Section 3 (From the bridge to the Cat Lai ferry terminal): Approximately 800 m long, maintaining the planned road width of 60 m with 6 lanes for motorized vehicles and 2 lanes for mixed traffic.
The area under the Cat Lai bridge has the widest cross-section at 73m.
Section 2, located in the area of the bridge piers and under the Cat Lai bridge, is approximately 630 meters long and has the widest cross-section, reaching 73 meters.

Relieving pressure on the Cat Lai port gateway.

Nguyen Thi Dinh Street is currently the only access route to and from Cat Lai Port – one of the largest container ports in Vietnam. With a traffic volume of over 20,000 vehicles, mainly container trucks, entering and exiting the port daily, the existing 4-6 lane road is constantly severely overloaded.

Traffic congestion is a frequent problem on Nguyen Thi Dinh Street.
Section 3, from the clearance under the bridge exceeding 5 meters to the Cat Lai ferry terminal, approximately 800 meters long, is proposed to be maintained according to the planned road width with a 60-meter cross-section.

The standardization of the new cross-sectional scale will serve as the basis for adjusting the zoning plans and master plans of Thu Duc City as well as Ho Chi Minh City. The Transport Department recommends that the Department of Construction promptly provide its consensus to finalize the report on adjusting the investment policy in the first quarter of 2026.

Nguyen Thi Dinh Street is located at the eastern gateway of Ho Chi Minh City and is the only road leading to and from Cat Lai Port.

Alignment with key projects

The Nguyen Thi Dinh road expansion project is a link in the eastern infrastructure network. Currently, the section from My Thuy roundabout to An Phu intersection is also being expanded with a total investment of nearly 2,000 billion VND.

Construction work to expand nearby roads.
The existing road only has 4-6 lanes, so it is frequently overloaded, becoming one of the traffic congestion hotspots for many years.

Meanwhile, the three-tiered My Thuy interchange is in its third phase of construction, expected to be fully completed in the third quarter of 2026. Notably, the Cat Lai bridge project connecting Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai province was inaugurated on January 15th and is expected to be completed in 2029.

The Cat Lai Bridge project, with an 8-lane capacity, was officially inaugurated by the Provincial People's Committee on January 15th.
The future of Nguyen Thi Dinh street
The Nguyen Thi Dinh road will be widened in parallel with the Cat Lai bridge, which is expected to be completed in 2029.

Upon completion, the expanded Nguyen Thi Dinh road will combine with the Cat Lai bridge and the My Thuy intersection to form a seamless transportation corridor, eliminating traffic congestion hotspots at the gateway area and promoting regional connectivity between Ho Chi Minh City and the Nhon Trach and Long Thanh districts of Dong Nai province.

The My Thuy intersection is under construction.
This is the current construction site for the My Thuy interchange. The completion date for this interchange has been adjusted by Ho Chi Minh City to the third quarter of 2026.

Note: Planning information and cross-sectional dimensions may change depending on the final approval decision of the competent authority.
