Training high-quality human resources, investing in technical spearheads, and promoting medical tourism are breakthrough solutions to help Ho Chi Minh City become a specialized medical center in the region.
The information was presented by Mr. Tang Chi Thuong, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, at the Conference on Evaluation of Effectiveness and Orientation for Development of Specialized Healthcare in Ho Chi Minh City on the morning of June 17.
Currently, Ho Chi Minh City is known as a major organ transplant center as well as a specialized pediatric center in the country. Medical facilities are invested, developed and serve as the final line of technical expertise for the entire Southern region, equivalent to the central medical facilities in Hanoi . Notable hospitals include Children's City, Tu Du, Cho Ray, Tropical, Oncology...
This is the first locality in the country to successfully perform in vitro fertilization in April 1998 at Tu Du Hospital; or one of the first kidney transplants in the country at Cho Ray 30 years ago.
In particular, in the field of in vitro fertilization (IVF), treatment costs in Ho Chi Minh City are only 1/6 compared to other countries in the region and the world , while the success rate is 50-60%, according to Dr. Hoang Thi Diem Tuyet, Director of Hung Vuong Hospital.
In addition, complex world techniques have been successfully applied such as robotic surgery to remove kidney cancer at Binh Dan Hospital, gene sequencing techniques for emerging diseases at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, microsurgery to connect limbs at the Hospital for Trauma and Orthopedics...
In addition, Ho Chi Minh City has 66 private hospitals out of nearly 330 private hospitals nationwide, accounting for nearly 20%. The private healthcare system is developing strongly with the number of outpatient and inpatient treatments in 2022 reaching more than 7.6 million, many specialized medical techniques are successfully performed.
These are the foundations for Ho Chi Minh City to build solution groups, turning this locality into a regional healthcare center, according to Mr. Thuong. "If this vision is successful, Ho Chi Minh City will not only attract domestic people, but also many international tourists to come for medical treatment and tourism," said the head of the city's health department.

The groups of solutions proposed by Mr. Thuong are to form a high-quality medical human resource training center; develop modern infrastructure, deploy high-tech medical zones according to the hospital-school model. On the other hand, Ho Chi Minh City will build a network of specialized care from intensive medicine to primary health care. Promote the combination of modern medicine and traditional medicine, develop medical tourism. In addition, research and development activities in specialized techniques will be invested in key areas such as cancer, cardiovascular, orthopedic trauma, etc.
Since late 2022, Ho Chi Minh City leaders have emphasized the vision of developing the locality into a healthcare center for the country and Southeast Asia. Accordingly, authorities will allocate land funds as well as study mechanisms and policies to attract social investment to develop a system of gateway hospitals and specialized hospitals.
In January this year, the health sector proposed to the City People's Committee to establish a regional-scale high-tech disease screening and early diagnosis center, and send personnel abroad to study and research to put the center into operation by 2025. This center will help detect dangerous diseases early at the asymptomatic stage, thereby providing early intervention, bringing high treatment efficiency, reducing the number of people going abroad for medical treatment, attracting tourists and foreigners.
Currently, Thailand is the leading country in Southeast Asia in terms of the number of tourists coming for medical treatment combined with tourism, followed by Singapore and Malaysia. Ho Chi Minh City and Vietnam are not yet on the list of places attracting international tourists to use health care services.
